“Ms. Perry?” The bodyguard bad climbed over, too, noticing her expression.
All strength seemed to drain from Rebecca’s body. She slid down the fence until she was sitting on the ground.
When the bodyguard called out to her again, she hugged her knees and burst into tears. All the pent–up stress poured out at once.
She cursed inwardly, “Vance, you bastard! You broke your word again. You said you’d let us know when you were discharged. Can’t I trust you even once?”
But she knew exactly why he had left without a word. He must have been in very bad shape.
Something occurred to her, and she abruptly looked up. These bodyguards, as Gabriel’s trusted people, might know something.
“How much did Vance’s hospital stay cost?” she asked.
The lead bodyguard paused. “I don’t know.”
“What did Gabriel tell you?”
“He… Nothing. My job is to protect you.”
“I understand.” Rebecca sighed, knowing these well–trained men would not reveal anything without Gabriel’s order.
She decided to ask him herself.
Gabriel came home late that night, startled to see Rebecca sitting on the second–floor stairs.
“Becky? What are you doing here?”
“Gabe, do you know what happened to Vance?”
He sat down beside her and remained silent.
“Did you see him when he was discharged?”
Gabriel glanced at her and let out a long sigh. “No. The hospital called me after he had left.”
“He just disappeared? Even Anna is unreachable. That’s unbelievable.” Rebecca thought of all the inconsistencies.
“I’ve been badly injured before. The only reason I would have left without telling anyone back then was that I thought I wasn’t going to make it. I would have slipped away quietly so Vance wouldn’t know.”
Gabriel put an arm around her shoulders. “Not every question in life has an answer. Leave it to tine.”
“I’m so confused right now,” she said blankly. “I’m sorry for keeping you up. Go get some rest. I’ll go to bed too.”
“Don’t overthink it,” he reassured her. “I’ll have someone look into it tomorrow.”
She nodded and returned to her room. The gardenia scent there had never changed. She fell asleep surrounded by its clean fragrance.
Someone seemed to be calling out, “Rebecca!”
She turned and saw the winter campus. Her senior–year self was sitting under the basketball hoop, lost in thought.
The person calling out to her was Jenny. The girl grabbed her hand and started running. “Hurry! Vance is fighting Darren Horton from Class 5!”
“Darren Horton? Have they ever fought?” Rebecca had no memory of it.
