People always said there was no true empathy in this world. But there was. Right now, Rebecca understood Vance perfectly. Seven years ago, she had done the same thing, constantly saying, “It doesn’t hurt. I’ll get better. Don’t worry.”

In truth, it had hurt badly, and she had been terrified.

Vance looked at Josette and then at Rebecca with pleading eyes. “Please, don’t come anymore. I don’t want you to see me so helpless and defeated. When I’m better, I’ll show up looking sharp and strong.”

Josette sighed. “Alright.”

“Becky?” He turned to Rebecca.

She took a deep breath, fighting the sting in her nose, and nodded.

“Promise me you’ll call when you’re discharged,” Josette said solemnly. “I’ll come pick you up and treat you to a good meal.”

He nodded. “I will. I promise.”

From that day on, neither of them visited the hospital again.

A few days later, Sant and the other bodyguard were discharged. But there was still no news from Vance.

Before they knew it, two weeks had passed.

While eating vanilla custard one evening, Josette muttered, “We should be eating these, but he’s still recovering. They might be hard to digest.”

“Don’t worry,” Gabriel said. “I’ve had people check on him. Sent food and gifts.”

Josette nodded.

She turned and ran out, telling the bodyguard to drive straight to Vance’s house. She knew where it was; she had picked Anna up there before.

When they reached the townhouse, she jumped out before the car even stopped. The gate was locked. She climbed over the fence, rang the doorbell, and pounded on the front door.

No one answered.

The commotion brought out a neighbor. “Hey, are you looking for Vance?”

“Yes. Has he come back?” Rebecca said anxiously.

The neighbor shook his head. “No. He hasn’t been home in a long time- 20 or 30 days? I can’t remember exactly.”

Rebecca felt a wave of utter despair. That was exactly the duration of Vance’s hospital stay, but he hadn’t come home. He had vanished.

“Thank you,” she mumbled, weakly leaning against the fence.
