Chapter 619

Rebecca stood on the sidewalk as people streamed past. She stared at the chocolate-colored window, feeling empty inside.

Later, the bodyguard came to take her home. Even as she walked away, she still felt hollow, as if her body had become weightless.

In the car, the low hum of the engine sounded like a white noise that made her feel even more detached. She closed her eyes. If not for her phone suddenly ringing, she might have fallen asleep.

It was Heather, now the troupe’s assistant director and her most reliable helper.

“Rebecca, are you really going back to the States? I wanted to go over the autumn performance schedule with you.”

“Yes, probably in the next few days. The plan we discussed last time was good. Send me any changes.”

“Got it. I’ll send them now.”

Rebecca reviewed the file in the car, made a few adjustments, and told Heather to proceed with the updated version.

Heather: [When are you going back?]

Rebecca was stumped. She typed and deleted her reply twice before answering vaguely: [Not sure yet. I’ll have to leave the troupe in your hands for now. I’ll contact you as soon as I’m back in Soliaridge.]

Heather: [Safe travels.]

The conversation helped pass the ride. Rebecca dozed a little and soon arrived home.

These past few days, the main topic at home had been her decision to return to the States. When she and Josette had first arrived, Kaitlyn had suggested immigration options.

At the time, they were worried Josette might not adapt or might miss home, so they had left it open- ended.

Years later, Josette had settled in fine. At the same time, Gabriel’s company had grown significantly. He had now spent half the year there and, despite growing up in Europe, preferred life back in the States.

So, the final choice came down to what Rebecca and Josette wanted.

Gabriel was home that day. He had promised to investigate Vance’s whereabouts, but even with all his resources, he had found nothing.

It was as if the man had vanished from the earth. In an era of big data and advanced Al, how could someone simply disappear?

The first thing Gabriel said was, “We found Anna.”

He was too sharp. One look at her face told him she already knew. They shared a brief, understanding silence. Neither had any new useful information.

“Gabe,” Rebecca said before going upstairs, “Anna told me she was never Vance’s girlfriend.”

Gabriel didn’t reply. His silence confirmed he already knew.

I’m going up to change.” Rebecca went to her room, showered, put on pajamas, and lay down for a nap.

People were contradictory creatures. There had been a time when she feared she couldn’t fall asleep. Now she feared falling asleep the moment she hit the pillow.

From experience, falling asleep too easily usually meant it would be hard to wake up. She slipped into another dream. This time, it was different.

School had just let out, and a basketball game had just finished. She held a bottle of water as Vance and the other boys from the team walked toward her.
