Chapter 632
Adeline eagerly pulled Casper forward. “Look how handsome and fashionable he is. What a great boy!” Handsome? Fashionable? Great boy?
Rebecca’s face stayed ice–cold. “If he is such a great catch, why don’t you marry him?”
Adeline was rendered speechless. Casper’s expression shifted, and so did his parents‘
Soren tried to salvage the situation, bowing slightly toward Dario. “My daughter is just too focused on her studies right now. She’s worried this will distract her. I’ll talk to her later and set her straight.”
“It won’t affect her studies,” Casper said quickly. “I’ll study with her.”
Dario looked thoroughly displeased. “Let’s leave it here for today.”
He turned to leave with his family.
“Stay for dinner,” Soren said quickly, then remembered there were only two dishes, and they had been put away. “We can eat at the restaurant at the village entrance. My treat.”
“Right! We’ll be family soon,” Adeline echoed, turning to Rebecca. “Becky, come on. Let’s go together.”
Rebecca had no intention of going anywhere with them, nor was she letting them walk away so easily. This nightmare had to end today, once and for all.
She had her own plan ready, but Darren beat her to it.
“What exactly do you people mean?” Though still a teenager, his voice carried a surprising weight of authority. “You sit here over one meal and casually talk about selling Rebecca off?”
All eyes in the room snapped to him.
Bolstered by the numbers on his side, Soren grew arrogant. “What do you want, kid? Watch yourself, or I’ll report you to the school! You’ll get punished and expelled!”
Darren’s gaze turned razor–sharp. “Go ahead. Go tell the school that Rebecca isn’t even an adult yet, and you’re trying to sell her off as someone’s wife. Let’s see if they call the police!”
Soren pointed at him, shaking with rage. “You little bastard! You think I have no influence in this village? Say one more word and see if you can walk out of here in one piece!”
“You want a piece of me?” Darren sneered. “Bring it on! If I get hurt, crippled, or killed, everyone here will be held accountable!”
People feared those who had nothing to lose more than those holding knives.
Soren began wavering, while Dario frowned. “Who is this kid to your family?”
Soren was momentarily stumped, then a malicious grin spread across his face. “Kid, you like Rebecca, don’t you?‘ I understand young folks like you, but don’t be so impulsive.
“You’re still young and don’t understand how the world works. The Strickland family is simply beyond your reach.” “Money?” Darren unstrapped the expensive watch from his wrist and tossed it onto the table with a clatter.
