Dario nodded with obvious satisfaction. But Darren, standing protectively beside Rebecca, fixed her with a strange, intense

Darren had probably never witnessed anything like this before.

“My mom is sick and resting. The door got locked by accident,” Soren said, leaning closer to Dario and lowering his voice. “It might be contagious. Better not let her out.”

Adeline jumped in smoothly. “She caught it wandering around outside. It’s not hereditary.”

Only then did Dario relax. His attention shifted back to Rebecca. “I hear you’re preparing for the SATs. Studying dance, right? That must cost a fortune.”

He pulled out a bank card and continued generously, “Here’s one million dollars. Take it for tutoring and professional training. Don’t skimp on anything.”

Soren’s hand shot out eagerly to grab the card. In one swift, decisive motion, Darren yanked the kitchen knife from the table and slammed it down, slicing the card in two.

“No!” Soren cried out, snatching up the half card with shaking hands. “You…”

Darren gave a cold, mocking laugh. “There you go. $500,000 is still pretty good.”

Soren almost blacked out with rage. With the card destroyed, he would get nothing.

Dario’s expression darkened. “Who is this kid?”

Darren tossed the remaining half of the card at him. “One million is that impressive? Who are you insulting?”

“This is between adults. Kids should stay out of it,” Dario said dismissively, assuming Darren was some relative of the Perry

family.

The four adults then launched into their well–rehearsed pitch–how Casper and Rebecca should become friends first, study together, have her tutor him, and apply universities side by side.

Since Dario had promised one million dollars for the engagement, it would still be paid despite the ruined card. They insisted on drafting a written agreement–just a folk custom with no legal standing, but something to hold onto in case Soren tried to back

out later.

Søren had no intention of backing out, ready to sign it as soon as possible.

“Whoever signs it can get engaged. Whoever takes the money can get engaged,” Rebecca said, staring at him coldly.
