Chapter 634
Josette didn’t stop there. She kept swinging the hoe, chasing Soren, who scrambled away on all fours, crying and screaming for mercy.
Adeline forgot her pain and fled with his in terror.
Josette stood firmly at the courtyard gate, hoe in hand, and shouted at their retreating backs, “If you two animals ever dare to scheme against Becky again, I’ll show you no mercy!”
Worried about her grandmother, Rebecca rushed outside. Josette’s fierce, protective declaration sent a powerful wave of warmth through her even within the dream.
She ran over and hugged Josette tightly from behind, pressing her face against her shoulder. “Grandma, they’re gone.”
Josette turned, set down the hoe, and pulled Rebecca into a fierce embrace, tears shining in her eyes. “I’m sorry, Becky. I failed to teach your father properly.”
Rebecca shook her head. “It’s not your fault, Grandma.”
Josette had raised Kaitlyn, too, who turned out so exceptional.
“Don’t worry,” Josette said, her voice thick with emotion. “I’ll protect you.”
Those simple, heartfelt words broke something open inside Rebecca. Tears stung her eyes. Everything felt so painfully, vividly real.
At this moment, she no longer believed she was dreaming. Perhaps she truly had traveled back in time.
Darren stood quietly on the side, watching the two embrace. The deepening night melted into his dark eyes, glinting with quiet, protective light.
Once they calmed down, Josette took Rebecca’s hand and walked over to Darren with a warm, though strained, smile. “Young man, thank you. You haven’t eaten yet, have you? I’ll make something fresh for you two right now.”
“I’ll help,” Darren offered eagerly.
“No need. Becky doesn’t need to help either. I can manage,” she said softly, going into the kitchen.
Both Rebecca and Darren could feel her distress. The sight pained Rebecca deeply and strengthened her will to leave this toxic place as soon as possible.
She opened the door to Josette’s room and discovered Josette had climbed out the window to come to heqrescue. Josette must have been frantic.
Barred from the kitchen, she and Darren sat on the steps in the courtyard as night fell completely. She hugged her knees under the light and could feel Darren watching her.
He must have been wondering about her family. It was hard to believe something like that had happened in the modern era, but that was what her parents were like.
In the original timeline, things had been even worse. She hadn’t known how low they could sink. When they called her to dinner, she had gone.
