Rebecca replied again, explaining she needed Josette and Kaitlyn to speak first.

Gabriel responded quickly, telling her not to worry and that she could rely on him. Rebecca found it hard to believe that he trusted her just based on a single email

This was the first time she had ever contacted him in the new timeline. But regardless of why he believed her, she had complete faith in him. With Gabriel intervening in their lives ahead of schedule, everything would turn out differently.

The next day, Rebecca headed to school for dance practice. She repeatedly urged Josette to keep the doors locked and not open them for anyone.

“Don’t worry. If he dares come back, he’ll get struck by lightning,” Josette reassured her.

Soren truly deserved to be struck by lightning.

Rebecca then asked their neighbors to keep an eye on Josette and call her if anything happened.

They had lived in the neighborhood for years and always had a good relationship with the neighbors. Plus, the neighbors hadn’t moved to the city yet, so they readily agreed to her request.

Rebecca went to practice, while Darren went to play basketball. They ended up at school at the same time. As they passed the basketball court, a ball flew straight toward them.

“Watch out!” Darren pushed her aside.

The ball slammed hard into his shoulder. Rebecca saw the angry red imprint and turned to see who had thrown it. Vance picked up the basketball from the ground and spun it casually on his fingertip.

‘Are you crazy? What if you hit Rebecca?” Darren yelled.

Vance watched her walk away as all his hostility, roguishness, and defiance melted away. He turned, dribbled the ball, and drove toward the hoop.

Amidst his teammates‘ cheers, he sank a perfect three–pointer. But when he looked back, the girl who used to clap for him from the sidelines was gone.

It was as if she had suddenly grown cold toward everything and everyone, except for Darren.

Vance threw the ball at Darren. “Your turn.”

The two gave their all on the court. By halftime, they were both bruised and battered.

Their teammates were baffled. “What are you two doing? Is this a basketball game or a fight? Are you mortal enemies or something?”
