Chapter 644
That was Gabriel’s typical style. He dropped her off at the school gate.
Final exams had ended, and summer break had started. But Rebecca had signed up for summer classes like a lot of the other students had, so the campus was still bustling.
She searched for Vance in the crowd, planning to remind him of getting his grandmother a checkup early. But saying it directl felt strange.
She saw him walking with another boy and hurried over, pretending to pass by.
“Rebecca!” he called out. “Why are you running so fast?”
She turned around. “Oh, I didn’t notice you.”
The boy beside Vance spoke. “Those dark circles are really bad. Did you stay up night playing games?”
Rebecca did get dark circles when she didn’t sleep well. But his comment gave her an idea.
“I really didn’t sleep well last night because an old lady in our neighborhood got sick,” she lamented, making up a story. “So, any elderly person shows abnormal symptoms, they really need to go to the hospital for a checkup.”
She sighed. “This old lady had symptoms before, losing weight really fast. People like to keep fit, but if someone suddenly lose a lot of weight, it’s a warning sign. Also…”
She listed all the early symptoms of Irene’s illness that she could remember. Vance’s expression shifted the moment she
mentioned sudden weight loss. With every new symptom, his face grew paler.
Finally, he couldn’t take it anymore. He told his classmate, “Cover for me with the teacher. I just remembered something at
home.”
“Okay,” the boy muttered in confusion.
Later, Rebecca learned about Vance’s absence from Jenny and sighed in relief. He’d do anything for the person he cared about
most.
Vance went home and didn’t find his grandmother. Earlier in the morning, she had asked what he wanted for dinner and said she would go buy groceries. Maybe she was out shopping.
