Chapter 652
The innocent crushes of youth were writing someone's name secretly in your textbook only to quietly erase it or having your breathing falter when they walked past the window while blaming the loud cicadas outside.
The two boys, still young and green, saw restraint, struggle, and passion reflected in each other's eyes—but no surrender. In the end, Vance looked away first. His eyelids lowered slightly, hiding the turbulent emotions in his deep eyes. I’m sorry, Darren. I can agree to anything else, but not this.*
Darren didn’t push further. “Then tell me, what in your life can you give up? And what can’t? I helped you, and I want something in return. But I don’t want garbage.”
Vance thought for a moment, then smiled with faint melancholy. He realized he didn’t have much to offer.
“Pretty much anything,” he said quietly, “except two people.”
“Which two?” Darren asked.
“My grandmother.” Vance paused, not saying the second name out loud. “And the other one… you already know.”
Darren didn’t ask again. They both understood who it was.
“Darren,” Vance continued, “I understand how you feel, but some things can’t happen just because one person wants them. It takes two, right?”
“How do you know she doesn’t want it?” Darren’s tone was equally certain.
“I’m more confident about this than I am about getting into any university.”
“Fine. Then let’s wait and see.”
“Alright.”
They left the hospital together, walking side by side like the best of friends, showing no sign of between them.
