Now that Irene had undergone surgery much earlier, Vance probably wouldn’t encounter Catherine anymore.
Rebecca’s only remaining goal was to keep her distance from him. But she failed when Jethro, Jenny, and several other former classmates came straight to the arts classroom to block her and Darren.
“Shall we?” Darren asked.
He had always planned to attend anyway. For their friendship on the basketball court alone, he would not miss Vance’s birthday.
The others did their best to convince her.
“Rebecca, we’re not in the same class anymore. It’s hard for us to get together. This is a rare chance!”
“Yeah. You’re always either in class or at dance practice. It’s hard to even bump into you in the cafeteria.”
“It’s not just a birthday party. Jethro wants everyone to hang out.”
Besides Vance, she still had friends like Jenny in this world. But if she were going, she should at least prepare a gift.
“What are you guys getting him?” she asked.
“We’re pooling money for a cake,” Jenny replied. “And since his grandma just had surgery, we’ll buy some get–well gifts, too.”
Rebecca thought that was a good idea. “Count me in.”
“Sure,” Jenny agreed readily.
The group went to Vance’s house together. The cake they had pooled money for was carried by
Darren.
Jethro opened the door with a big grin. “You guys are finally here! Wow, this looks amazing!”
“We bought it together,” Jenny said, gesturing to the group.
“Got it. I’ll tell Vance,” Jethro enthused.
His eyes flicked toward Rebecca, noting that her hands were empty. He frowned slightly as he placed the cake on the table.
Vance showed up afterward, leading the group to visit Irene, who was resting in her room. Rebecca walked at the very back. Back then, she had pretended to be a volunteer and taken care
