Chapter 661
Rebecca quickly took the two skewers of beef from his hands. “Thanks.”
Vance had specifically said beef. She knew why.
There had been one time when she, Jenny, and a few other classmates were buying grilled skewers from a street cart outside school. Vance had been there, too.
She had casually mentioned, “I want beef, not lamb. I don like the gamey smell.”
He had an excellent memory. After all, he was one of the top students in their grade. It all depended on whether he wanted to remember.
They had been married for five years, yet she felt like he had never remembered her preferences. So, why did fre remember now? She bit into the meat. It was a little dry and overcooked. His cooking skills weren’t that great yet at this age.
But that night, he seemed unusually interested in grilling. He kept working nonstop, never eating any himself. No matter what he grilled, the last portion always ended up in her hands.
When he finally handed her a grilled sardine, she waved him off. “I’m full. Thanks. I can’t eat anymore.”
She was already stuffed and simply held the fish without taking a bite.
Jenny and Jethro immediately started heckling. “We’re still hungry! Grill some more squid!”
Vance stood up. “I’m going to wash my hands.‘
“Hey, Rebecca’s not eating, so you stop? You can’t play favorites like that!” Jethro blurted out.
Vance paused. “What are you talking about? I’m going to wash some fruit. We’ve eaten so much grilled meat. Aren’t you guys thirsty? Fruit will help cut through the grease.”
He wasn’t a talkative person. Explaining too much only revealed his unease. Luckily, they were all teenagers with relatively simple minds. No one, Rebecca included, picked up on it.
She never imagined that he had spent the entire evening grilling just to give everything to her. She didn’t have that kind of confidence. She knew very clearly that at this point, he did not like her. He had never liked her.
As for why he had suddenly changed aft
their divorce, it was probably because Catherine had disappointed him so deeply that he finally remembered his ex–wife, who had lived with him day after day.
There might have been love, but it came so much later that she would rather he had never loved her at all.
She held the fish, hesitating. Her stomach was too full of meat and felt greasy, but throwing it away would be wasteful. She decided to wait until he brought out fruit, eat some to settle her stomach, and then continue.
But her hesitation was obvious. Darren noticed. “Can’t finish it?”
“I’ll eat it later.”
“Don’t force yourself. Give it to me.”
“Huh?”
She hadn’t bitten into it yet, so it was fine.
