“Vance, the grapes are falling! Jethro rushed over and took the basin from him. “Was it too full? Too heavy?”
“Yeah,” Vance answered distractedly.
He squatted down to pick up the grapes, but his peripheral vision kept drifting to the other side. In the right light, Rebecca’s smile at Darren seemed to glow.
It reminded him of that afternoon under the camphor tree in front of the teaching building. She had rushed toward Darren like a deer with that same smile.
“These got dirty. Should we throw them away?” Jethro moved to his side, blocking his view.
“Yeah.” Vance tossed the spoiled grapes into the trash, then returned to his seat as if nothing had happened.
By now, everyone had eaten their fill, but it was still early. So, Jethro suggested playing games.
Some wanted to play poker, while others suggested idioms or poetry chains. In the end, they settled on the classic Truth or Dare -Jethro’s choice.
“We came out to have fun!” he exclaimed. “Who wants to recite poetry and idioms? That’s exhausting. Let’s play something simple, brainless, and exciting.”
They didn’t have any props, so they used a phone for music and passed around a small melon from the fruit basin. In the first few rounds, the melon kept landing on Jethro, Jenny, and the others.
Crushes at this age were still shy and hidden, but the game gave everyone an outlet. Almost all the questions revolved around
romance.
Both Jenny and Jethro were asked if they liked anyone. Jenny answered confidently that she didn’t.
Jethro hemmed and hawed, and under the pressure of a dare, finally admitted, “Yes.”
Jenny tried to ask who it was, but Jethro turned red and shouted, “That’s the second question! Aren’t we only allowed to ask one?
“Wow, Jethro is blushing? That’s rare!” Jenny laughed loudly.
“Are we playing or not?” Jethro vowed revenge.
The game continued. This time, when the music stopped, the melon landed squarely in Vance’s hands.
“Finally! The birthday boy gets his turn!” Jenny exclaimed. Drawing from experience, she asked directly, “Vance, who’s the girl you like?”
Vance stayed silent for a moment. “I choose Dare.”
Jenny and Jethro screamed, “Ah! He does like someone!”
“Man, you have a secret! Tell us who she is!”
“Dare!” Vance repeated, dampening their spirit.
“Fine,” Jenny sighed. “Are you sure?”
“Yeah.”
