“There were so many people on the bus. What was there to be afraid of?” Rebecca said matter–of–factly.
The road was lined with sycamore trees and bustling crowds. They walked through the throng in silence.
“Rebecca…” Vance tried several times to speak, but waves of people kept interrupting. By the time they reached the building, he still hadn’t gotten the chance. /
Rebecca had no idea he wanted to talk. At the bakery entrance, she waved. “Bye, I’m heading up.”
He watched her leave, swallowing the words he wanted to say.
Rebecca finished dance practice two hours later. She had arranged for Gabriel to pick her up, but he got stuck in traffic and would
arrive in 20 minutes.
She debated whether to wait on the sidewalk or go back into the building to browse the mall. When stre turned around, Vance was seen standing behind her.
“Are you off work?” she asked casually.
“Almost,” he said, gazing at the fine beads of sweat on her forehead.
She had tied her hair into a high bun, revealing her slender neck. She looked as elegant as a white swan.
“Waiting for your ride?” He had noticed her checking her phone earlier.
“Yeah.”
“When will it arrive?”
“In around 20 minutes.”
“Then come inside and sit for a while. It’s too
out here.”
He invited her into the shop. The heat had made her nose tip/sweaty.
“Alright…”
It was the hottest time of day. Even though the sun had set, the ground radiated heat like a steamer.
She followed Vance into the bakery. Not wanting to take the air conditioning for free, she picked up a tray and started selecting
bread.
Since Kaitlyn and Gabriel were home and liked bread, she didn’t mind buying extra.

There were no other customers in the shop, and Vance was the only staff member. He followed her, watching as she placed loaves on the tray.
“Rebecca…”
“Hm?”
She continued choosing, remembering Kaitlyn and Gabriel’s preferences. Kaitlyn liked croissants. Gabriel was disciplined and liked eating the healthier, less tasty options.
“You like these?” Vance was surprised to see her choosing the dry, bland kinds popular with dieters.
“No, these are for my family.”
“O–kay.”

That was a relief. Otherwise, he would have doubted if the person in front of him was really Rebecca.
