“It’s fine. You didn’t say anything wrong. You work here and represent the shop,” Vance soothed her. “You don’t need to wait on us. These guys are all old friends of mine. Go ahead and take care of the other tables.”

“Yeah, alright.” Catherine sobbed a little before walking away.

Rebecca knew this routine all too well. Jenny was about to get chewed out.

Sure enough, Jethro jumped in. “Jenny, why are you always so harsh to Catherine? She hasn’t done anything to you. She is always friendly.”

Jenny gave a cold laugh. “The fact that you’re defending her right now proves she’s not so friendly.”

“What kind of logic is that?” Jethro sulked.

“You don’t get it because you’re clueless. I get it because I know exactly how to full the same fake–sweet act,” Jenny shot back.

Jethro threw up his hand. “You don’t have to insult yourself just to win an argument against me, you know.”

“I’m stating facts!” Jenny grabbed a large appetizer and took a big bite.

“Vance, Rebecca, back me up here. Isn’t Jenny being totally unreasonable?” Jethro appealed.

Vance finally spoke. “Is it really worth fighting over something so small?”

“Exactly!” Jethro perked up, grinning smugly as he turned to Rebecca. “Rebecca, you weigh in.”

“Me?” Rebecca twirled the cup in her hands. “I have very firm principles.”

Jethro brightened. “Go on.”

“Go fight for the spot!” Jethro sneered. “If you spoke better French.”

Rebecca stayed quiet for the rest of the meal.

After dinner, Aaron came to pick her up. Jenny was still mad at Jethro, so she didn’t hang around with the two guys. Instead, she tagged along with Rebecca to get a ride back.

In the car, Jenny was still fuming. “Catherine is such a fake sweet girl, always putting on a nice face and talking shit behind your back. She’s been trying to drive a wedge between me, Vance, and Jethro this whole time! How can anyone be stupid enough to fall for her act?”

“Then we’re keeping her out of the circle,” Rebecca said firmly.

She had shifted the course of events, but Catherine had still shown up. She was terrified that things would play out the same between Catherine and Vance.

She would end up losing the use of her leg, and Vance would meet a terrible fate, too.
