Rebecca tried to interrupt but couldn't find an opening. Seeing Vance about to walk off side-by-side with Aiden, she rushed forward and planted herself right in front of him.
"Rebecca?" Vance's eyes were sparkling with the joy of victory. He tried to introduce her. "This is..."
"Vance," Rebecca cut him off, not wanting that. Her tone was half-questioning and half-sulky. "You promised you'd have dinner with me!"
He paused, and she went all out. "Are you going back on your word again? Fine then!"
She turned away, looking genuinely upset. The tight surprise on Vance's face slowly relaxed, and his eyes glowed softly with the twilight.
Aiden chuckled. "Man, is this your..."
Vance gave a light laugh and didn't explain, seemingly accepting Aiden's assumption. "Darren, you take everyone to eat. It's my treat."
Darren's glare could have cut glass. Vance patted his shoulder. "We've got so many friends here. Host them properly. Thanks."
"Sorry, guys." Vance waved. "Something came up. Darren will take you out for a meal. I'll treat you properly next time."
He gave Darren a push and finally sent the whole group off. Then he stood in front of Rebecca, his eyes searching hers. "What scheme are you cooking up this time?"
"N-nothing. I promised to treat you to chicken?" she stammered, finally feeling the weight of the gazes all around them.
Jenny's mouth was hanging open. Rebecca quickly waved her over. "We already planned to eat together!"
Jenny blinked, somehow feeling like she shouldn't be there. A glance at Vance confirmed that feeling was correct.
"Uh... I just remembered I still have a worksheet to finish. I'll head back now," she stammered, turning to sprint away.
