Chapter 388 The Welcome They Deserve

A wave of relief washed over Layla.

The thought of anyone getting hurt because of this mess weighed on her, even if, logically, none of it could be blamed on her.

Seeing the lingering concern in her eyes, Carson offered a gentle reassurance. “They should catch up any minute now. Once they’re with us, that area will be clear of danger.”

Layla responded to his comfort with a soft, appreciative smile.

Before Emily could speak, she found herself pulled into a tight embrace by Jacob.

He buried his face in the crook of her neck, his silence speaking volumes of the fear he’d been holding back.

A soft chuckle escaped Layla’s lips.

It seemed this dating show was actually good for something. At the very least, it looked like Emily had found herself a suitable male partner.

Sensing his worry, Emily gave his back a few gentle pats.

“It’s okay. I’m fine. We’re probably in the safest spot right now,” she murmured before asking, “Any news from Rowan and the others?”

Jacob took a deep, steadying breath. “When those new pirate ships showed up and didn’t head straight for the Thunder Pterosaur, Mr. Fields knew something was off. He made the call for Shane and me to pull out immediately. He was right-the pirates were after Shane. We managed to avoid them on the way here.”

Emily let out a sigh of relief at his words but then turned a serious gaze toward Layla. “They’ll be on our trail soon. We need a plan, and fast.”

Layla’s eyes narrowed as she glanced toward the main camp.

“No need to rush,” she said calmly.

Her gaze met those of the men waiting expectantly. The look on her face told them she already had something in mind.

Layla said without preamble, “Right then. Carson, Emily, Jacob-I need you three to take Shane to the spot behind the waterfall where the crew stashed their gear. Get settled in and stay put. Don’t come out unless I come for you myself.”

Her attention shifted to Oliver. “Do you have some defensive gear on you?”

Oliver, being from the royal family, naturally came prepared.

He nodded and slipped off a bracelet from his wrist, handing it to Layla. “Place this on the ground. It’ll generate a protective shield about thirty feet across, strong enough to withstand at least three direct hits from an energy missile.”

After a quick examination, Layla passed the bracelet to Emily. “Keep Shane safe for me.”

Emily accepted it, her voice laced with worry. “What about you? What’s your plan?”

A determined glint flashed in Layla’s eyes. “We’re going to give these interstellar pirates the welcome they deserve.”

The audacity of their attack was a clear declaration of war, and she had no intention of backing/down.

“But what if you can’t hold them off?” Emily pressed, her concern deepening.

“We don’t necessarily have to win. We just need to buy enough time for the military and the Galactic Guard to get here. Once they arrive, it’s over,” Layla explained, her tone steady.

Seeing the unwavering confidence in Layla’s expression, Emily finally relented.

“Just… be careful,” she said softly before turning to leave with Shane and Jacob.

Layla had chosen them for their combat skills—if pirates did stumble upon them, that group could put up decent fight.

Watching their retreating figures disappear into the foliage, Layla released a long, slow breath.

When she turned back to the remaining group, her face was set with resolve.

“Listen up. No matter what happens next, you follow my lead. Got it?”

The ominous tone of her command sent a ripple of unease through them.

George stepped closer, taking her hand in his. “Layla, what are you planning?”
