Chapter 389 Fight With Hyenas

A playful smile touched Layla’s lips as she pinched George’s cheek. “So, what reward did you have in mind”

George’s eyes lit up, a faint blush coloring his checks.

He opened his mouth to reply, but Oliver cut in, grabbing Layla’s arm. “Time to move. We need to get out of here before those interstellar pirates catch up.”

George shot Oliver a glare that could melt steel. “Seriously? You just had to ruin the moment, didn’t you?

Oliver met his stare with an expression of pure innocence. “Just thinking about the mission, man. Don’t be so paranoid. Unless… that’s just how you operate?”

Layla sighed, massaging her temple, “Could you two please save it for later? This isn’t the time.”

Both men fell silent immediately, though another shared, heated glare passed between them.

Their bickering, however, had unintentionally broken some of the lingering tension in the air.

Turning her attention to the task at hand, Layla lowered her voice, addressing Oliver and Liam, “Gather the rest. We’re moving out now.”

Her intended path wasn’t far from Carson’s route.

The reason for her delayed departure had been a simple hunch-a hope to spot any tails.

To her satisfaction, that hunch had paid off.

No sooner had they started in the direction Carson’s team had taken than they encountered a pair of hyenas.

But these were no ordinary hyenas. Their forms were wrong, movements jerky and mechanical.

Layla raised a hand, signaling a halt.

Oliver shuddered, goosebumps rising on his arms. “What in the stars are those things? Some kind of lab experiment?”

Liam’s voice was a low, grim rumble. “Lab-grown, definitely. And that metal plating fused to their spines… it’s laced with Starcore Ore.”

The name confirmed Layla’s suspicions.

“So Taylor’s forces are already hunting for Shane.”

Meeting these creatures here meant they were on the right trail.

If they’d left with Carson earlier, they would have missed this cluc entirely.

A slow, confident smile spread across Liam’s face as he cracked his knuckles.

He glanced back at Layla, his tone softening. “Stand back, Layla. I’ll handle this.”

As a seasoned general, he had combat skills that were beyond question.

Layla offered no argument, simply pulling Oliver a few safe steps away.

With a fluid motion, Liam activated a blade of pure energy that sprang from a device on his wrist.

The two hyenas sensed the threat and let out low, warning growls. Their mechanized claws scraped against the rocky ground.

Eager to prove himself, Liam launched forward without hesitation.

The creatures were swift.

One darted aside while the other lunged, jaws snapping for his leg.

Liam pivoted, driving a boot hard into the second hyena’s unprotected belly.

A pained yelp tore from the beast as it crashed to the ground near Layla’s feet.

Seizing the opening, she didn’t hesitate. In one smooth motion, she drew the long blade Emily had gifted her and brought it down in a decisive arc.

The creature convulsed, a pool of sickly azure spreading beneath it, before falling still.

The remaining hyena’s eyes flashed with a vicious crimson light.

Its attacks became a frenzied blur. Without warning, it opened its maw, and a crackling sphere of raw energy gathered within, firing directly at Liam.

Liam hadn’t expected the hyena to be modified and able to channel energy. The attack caught him off- guard.

He barely dodged, the energy blast obliterating a small rock formation behind him with a deafening boom.

Surprise flickered in Liam’s eyes-not at the power of the blast, but at the sophistication of the pirates’ bio- engineering,

To achieve such offensive capability in a live subject was no small feat.

He turned back, a cold smirk playing on his lips.
