Chapter 395 Bake You a Cake

Lala shook her head, taking a seat beside Shane’s bed. She gently clasped his hand, her eyes sparkling as she smiled, “You helped the most.”

A flicker of confusion crossed his cool gray eyes.

She explained softly. “The pirates held back from attacking the rest of the camp to avoid harming you. If you hadn’t been here… who knows how many people might have died today.”

Her words eased the lingering guilt in Shane’s gaze, allowing a more genuine smile to touch his lips.

Just then, Emily approached, cradling a small medical kit. “I brought some supplies. See if anything here can help Prof. Slater recover faster.”

Touched by the gesture, Layla stood and offered Emily a warm, sincere smile. “Thank you.”

“Don’t mention it. We’re all friends here. Looking out for each other is what we do,” Emily replied with a shrug.

Emily wasn’t the only one. Soon, others began trickling in, arms laden with gifts and supplies.

“Thank you, Layla. We owe you one today. If it weren’t for you all, we’d be finished. Please, take this-it’s the least we can do.”

Facing the familiar faces, their tones earnest and unusually kind, Layla accepted their offerings graciously.

Her gaze swept over the small pile of goods now covering their table, a subtle smile playing on her lips.

It seems most people still have their heads on straight, aware of who saved the day.

Though, Stella must not have stirred up too much trouble this time. Otherwise, a few misguided souls would probably still be buying her nonsense.

With a soft chuckle, Layla cleared her throat, addressing the group, “Really, everyone, there’s no need for all this. We’re in the same boat now, all contestants on this show together.”

Her down-to-earth remark lightened the mood considerably.

They asked a few more questions about Shane’s condition, then wisely decided not to overstay their welcome. The visitors filed out.

Letting Shane rest was the priority now.

Once the room had cleared, George sidled up to Layla. “It’s a long day, Layla. You must be tired.”

Layla couldn’t help but laugh, giving his cheek an affectionate pinch.

She knew exactly what he was after. “Here to remind me about my promise, are we?”

George grinned, a little sheepish at being seen through so easily.

He then pouted, feigning hurt, “Layla! Is that what you think of me? I was just worried you were tired!”

Ah, I see. In that case, I suppose you wouldn’t mind if I forgot about that little promise, then?” Layla teased, pping her chin thoughtfully.

His eyes flew wide with panic. “No, no, no! A deal’s a deal!”

Seeing the mirth dancing in Layla’s eyes, George realized she was just pulling his leg.

He huffed playfully, though his own smile was impossible to hide.

Rising to her feet, Layla turned back to Shane, her voice softening. “Get some proper rest. Don’t worry about anything else.”

Shane gave a faint nod and obediently closed his eyes.

Stepping out of the room, Layla found the others gathered around the main table.

She cleared her throat, and all eyes turned to her, awaiting her words.

She announced, “The immediate danger has passed. Life can go back to normal for now. As for the Starcore Ore mine, we’ll revisit that once Shane is fully recovered.”

Merging with the Starcore Essence took a lot out of him, and this latest ordeal didn’t help.

She was genuinely afraid he wouldn’t pull through.

“I’ll look after Prof. Slater. It’s the least I can do.” Yates volunteered promptly.

Pleased by his initiative, Layla nodded approvingly. “Good man. For being so helpful, I’ve decided to bake you a cake in a couple of days.”

The mention of cake instantly brewed a storm in two teacups.
