Chapter 405 Something That Glows

The man let out a long sigh and spoke quietly. “I’m not trying to pullany tricks. I honestly can’t remember many things anymore.”
Layla and Carson traded a glance after hearing his reply.
Surprise showed clearly in both of their eyes.
‘You say you can’t remember-why is that?” Carson asked.
The man kept scratching at his head, looking rather dazed. “The miasma out there is toxic. It’s erased a lot of my memories. I barely made it to this cave, and that slowed down the poison from the miasma. I would’ve died long ago otherwise.”
Layla’s mind clicked at his explanation.
All the restless irritation that had gnawed at her had vanished ever since they stepped inside this space.
she studied him and realized she had never asked for his name.
A sheepish smile crossed the man’s face, and he spoke in a low voice. “I still remember my name, though. t’s Zeke Gower.”
ayla nodded thoughtfully at his short introduction. “It’s good you can still hold onto that much.”
‘eke’s face lit up with childlike joy at Layla’s mild praise.
He had spent so long trapped here, damaged by the toxic fumes, and parts of his mind had grown fuzzy.
ayla had spoken in that gentle, coaxing tone on purpose, as if she were talking to a small kid.
Leke grew far more open after receiving Layla’s approval.
le rambled on to Layla about all sorts of things.
His body language even showed clear fondness toward her.
Carson frowned as he watched Zeke’s gaze lock firmly onto Layla.
Leke picked up on the sharp warning rolling off Carson.
He shrank his neck and stared at Carson with obvious fear in his eyes.
Layla gave Carson a light pinch at his waist. “Can’t you tell what state he’s in? He’s acting just like a little kid Let it go.”
Carson huffed softly, yet he said nothing further.
He could hear the coaxing lilt in Layla’s voice; she truly was treating Zeke like a confused child.
Zeke went on to mention there was another person hiding inside this cave. “But he doesn’t like me. He hits

me all the time.”
That explained Zeke’s fire reaction when Carson threw him to the ground earlier. He had instantly covered his head to shield his most vulnerable spots from blows.
Layla felt pity seeing how thin and frail Zeke was.

She tilted her chin toward Carson, and he pulled out one of Layla’s pre-made sandwiches and handed it over to Zeke.
Zeke blinked. He caught the scent of food in the air and lunged forward for it.
Layla pulled her hand away. She held Zeke’s gaze steady. “You can have this, but you have to answer one question for me first.”
Zeke bit at the tip of his finger and nodded rapidly. “Ask me anything.”
“Do you know who that other man is?” Layla asked.
Zeke thought it over. He shook his head, then nodded again.
“Take your time,” Layla said. “Tell me absolutely everything you know about him.”
Zeke began to speak slowly. “I think I knew him back at the palace. His rank was higher than mine. I only got to see him every now and then. He served alongside one of the princes, I believe.”
Layla’s eyes shot wide open.
