He clamped both hands over his head and forgot all about the sandwich. “I can’t remember. My head hurts so badly, it really does.”
Layla stepped back and stopped pushing Zeke for answers.
She sighed and pulled a piece of candy out from her coat, then held it out to him. “Have this candy for now. Once your head feels better, we’ll get you some more food.”
Zeke broke into another happy smile.
Layla and Carson stepped off to one side and lowered their voices to talk privately.
“Do you trust Zeke?” Carson asked.
Layla paused to think. “He’s the only person we’ve found down here, so far. We haven’t run into the other man yet. Whether his story is true or not, he is our only source of clues about the energy field.”
Carson knew her point held weight.
He let out a quiet sigh. “If he really was a royal-family guard, how did he end up in this cave?”

Carson kept pressing the question. “If that other man really is the one who looked after Prince Oliver, what would he be doing down hose?
Isn’t there some clear connection between the two cases?”
Carson’s guess echoed exactly what Layla had been thinking.
No matter how many theories they tossed around, though, getting the full truth out of a man whose mind had been warped by the miasma was next to impossible.
Both of them glanced over at Zeke, who held his head and groaned in pain.
After quite some time, Zeke finally pulled himself together.
He acted as if nothing painful had just happened and shuffled over to Layla’s side. “Do you have any more ood?” he asked.
ayla reached inside her coat to pull something out when heavy footsteps echoed from outside the cave.
Leke threw his hands over his head in terror. “That’s him. He’s coming. He’s coming.”
ayla narrowed her eyes and shared a quick look with Carson.
he stroked Zeke’s head and lowered her voice. “Don’t give us away. We’ll step in to save you when he hurts
‘ou.”
Leke stared at Layla with clear hesitation, then nodded and chose to trust her.
ayla and Carson slipped into separate hiding spots.
Before long, a figure stepped slowly into view.
fis face was heavily disfigured, and his features looked grotesque,
ayla could barely make out what he might have looked like originally.
The man walked straight up to Zeke.
Leke curled in on himself and covered his head with both arms.
The next instant, the man lifted one leg and slammed his boot down onto Zeke’s shoulder.
Layla balled her fists tight. She fought hard against the urge to rush out into the open.
Then the man spoke to Zeke. “Useless wretch! Did you find anything to eat lately?”
Zeke’s hands shook as he held out the half-eaten sandwich.
The same worried thought crossed both Layla’s and Carson’s minds.

This food was no random find from the wilds.
Anyone who spotted it would immediately realize other people had been here.

Sure enough, the man’s expression darkened sharply, and he barked a sharp question. “Who have you been talking to?”
There was no way to keep their presence hidden any longer. Carson gave Layla’s shoulder a light tap. signaling her to stay concealed, and stepped out into the open by himself.
Layla’s heart beat faster as she watched Carson’s back.
The man who had been tormenting Zeke spun toward Carson, and a knowing smirk tugged at his mouth. “How did you track this place down?”
Carson ignored his question and replied in a flat tone, “Who are you?”
The man let out a short laugh, mockery in his eyes. “You dare barge in here looking for trouble, and you don’t even know who I am?”
Carson narrowed his eyes, sized the man up from head to toe, and let out a scoff. “You don’t strike me as some big-shot. What have I got to be afraid of?”
Hatred burned bright in the other man’s eyes once he heard Carson’s reply. “Do you have any idea who you’re talking to?”
Carson shrugged. “Your identity means nothing to me. You clearly never amounted to much; otherwise you wouldn’t be stuck in this hole picking on a man broken by miasma fumes.”
Carson’s words struck a raw nerve.
His expression shifted repeatedly before he stormed toward Carson with pure malice. “If you had half a brain, you would’ve heard my name-it’s Arnold Jacobs.”
Arnold?
A flicker of recognition crossed Carson’s face. He did know this man.
Arnold had once served as a royal family elite guard, which meant he had stood right beside members of the royal line.
Still, how had someone of his standing ended up trapped down in this cave?
Carson studied him, narrowed his eyes, and replied coolly, “Never heard of you.”
