Gianna’s POV
The music continued, couples swaying across the dance floor, laughter and conversation filling the air. But all I could focus on was the entrance.
Where is he?
My eyes kept drifting back to the doorway, waiting for Dante to walk through. It had been way too long for just checking on a security breach.
What if something happened? What if whoever broke in was still there? What if they were armed and a fight had broken out?
I shook my head, trying to push the thoughts away.
He’s Dante. The mafia king. Of course he’s safe.
He had Bruno with him. The entire estate was on lockdown. Every guard was on high alert. If there was real danger, they would have come back for reinforcements.
“You’re going to wear a hole in the door if you keep staring at it.”
I turned to find Mira beside me, wearing a grin to hide my worry.
“Don’t you worry, Gia.” She placed a hand on my arm. “I’m sure they’re handling the situation. Whoever it is will be caught. Dante and Bruno are a force together. Nothing gets past them.”
I nodded, trying to believe her words. “I hope so. I just feel bad that it had to be today.”
Mira shrugged. “That’s one of the downsides of this life. One minute everyone’s dancing, and the next it’s go time and the men leave for whatever mafia thing needs handling.”
I let out a breath, a bitter laugh escaping. “The irony of it all. Because of my father, I wanted nothing to do with this life. And now look at me.”
I gestured to my dress, the elaborate white gown that marked me as his.
“Married to the leader of the entire mafia in the country.”
Mira laughed, the sound genuine and warm. “Life has a funny way of giving you exactly what you swore you’d never want.”
“Apparently.”
She bumped my shoulder with hers. “Come on. Let’s dance. Sitting here worrying isn’t going to make them come back any faster.”
I hesitated. “Won’t that make people suspicious? That Dante’s been gone too long and maybe the intruder’s partners might…”
Mira chuckled. “You worry too much. None of that’s going to happen. And even if it did, they wouldn’t get very far. This place is a fortress.”
Despite everything, I smiled. “You’re right. It’s still my wedding day. I have to make the most of it.”
She pulled me toward the dance floor, and we started swaying to the music. It felt good to move, to do something other than stand there and worry.
People were staring. I could feel their eyes on us, whispers passing between couples.
I didn’t want to focus on it. So I raised a question to shift the conversation.
After a moment, I leaned in closer. “So, when are you and Bruno going to finally make it official? Have a wedding like this?”
Mira’s expression shifted, her smile fading. “I don’t think that’s going to happen.”
I pulled her into a hug, holding her tight. “I’m going to miss you.”
“I’ll miss you too.” She pulled back, wiping at her eyes. “But hey, at least you’ll have your hands full being the mafia queen. You won’t even notice I’m gone.”
I laughed despite the heaviness in my chest. “That’s not true. You’ve been my true friend since I got here. You shared a secret, I ended up getting you in trouble, and you forgave me. Your friendship means a lot to me.”
Mira squeezed my hand. “You mean a lot to me too, Gia. You’re stronger than you think.”
Just then, the entrance door opened. Both Mira and I looked at the same time.
Please let it be Dante.
But it wasn’t. Another guard walked in, heading straight to Alfonso.
Mira frowned. “Okay, it’s been a while. They should have been back by now if it was nothing. I’m starting to think there’s more to this.”
My heart started beating faster at the thought of any harm coming to Dante.
I didn’t want to imagine it. Couldn’t bear the thought. And I was tired of sitting around waiting. I needed to go and check things out for myself.
“I need to go and check on them myself.”
Mira’s eyes widened. “I don’t know, Gia. Don said you should wait for him. And I’m thinking he’s right. There could be bad guys out there.”
“And nothing,” I cut her off. “If I’m going to be Dante’s wife, I have to learn to take charge. I can’t just wait around doing nothing like a dutiful… whatever. Dante knows I’m far from that. He married me knowing exactly who I am.”
