“I’ll tell the Queen to cure her, I’m sure she can.”

“No, she already tried. She can’t cure her, only delay the illness. But in the end, she will die, because

force is escaping from her body. That’s why I’m telling you this even though Maya will want to kill me

she finds out I told you everything. Her only chance of survival is to return to the Fairyland.”

“There has to be another way to cure her.”

“There isn’t. The Fairyland is the only thing that will cure her.”

“Then she should just go and be cured.”

“No, once she returns, she won’t be able to come back to the human world. The Queen won’t allow it.”

“Is that why Maya doesn’t want to go? She doesn’t want to leave her human lover. She prefers to die.”

“But you can’t let her do that.”

“You are here to convince her.”

“Yes, but she still won’t listen to me. But if you tell her, maybe she…”

“Take me to her, now.”

The little pixie led him to the room where Maya was. He threw the door open. He had no time to lose. He needed to see her, to see with his own eyes the state his sister was in, to see if what that fairy had said was true.

Maya was lying in bed looking sickly. He strode over to her.

Cassian was very surprised to see Barto.

“What are you doing here?!”

Barto ignored Cassian. He knelt by the bed and took his sister’s hand. Up close, he saw that her condition was even worse. She looked pale and her hands were very cold, as if she were dying.

He was saddened to see the state his sister was in. His voice trembling and his face clouded, he said, “So it’s true. You’re dying.”

Maya had been so surprised when she saw her brother that she didn’t realize the little pixie was on his shoulder, not until he was right in front of her. When she heard her brother’s words and saw the expression on his face, she had no doubt he had told him everything.

Barto ignored Cassian’s question and asked Maya, “When were you planning on telling us you wer

Cassian pulled Barto away and asked Maya in a very agitated tone, “What do you mean you’re dyir

Maya?”

Maya shot the little fairy a murderous look.

Seeing Cassian so upset, Maya placed her hand on his and said, “Cassian, calm down. I’m not goin

now.”

“You are weak. If you continue like this, you will die,” said the pixie.

Maya tried to get up to grab her and crush her like a grape before she said anything else, but her boc wouldn’t respond. She was so weak she could barely move.

Cassian took Maya’s face in his hands. “Maya, tell me what that fairy meant. Tell me what she’s sayir

lie.”

Maya wanted to tell him that it was all a lie, but she couldn’t. She was tired of lying to him.

“Fairies can’t lie, Cassian.”

Cassian knew that, but he needed another answer. He needed her to tell him it was a lie, that she was

that she wasn’t going to die.

“No, no,” he said, putting his arms around her and holding her tight.

Barto asked, “When did your illness start?”

“A while ago,” Maya replied.

Cassian said, “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I didn’t want to worry you, Cassian. I didn’t want to see you

suffer.”

“When you were sick and I didn’t know why, I suffered. The fear of losing you drove me crazy. I’m your partner, or is it just me who thinks that way?”

“Of course not, Cassian. I…” Maya trailed off.

Cassian said, “You don’t trust me.”

“That’s not it. I didn’t want you to know that our time together was limited. I didn’t want you to know that

you were with a dying woman. I didn’t want it to change the way you see me.”

“I love you, Maya. The way I see you will never change because my feelings for you are real and strong. There is nothing that will change that.”

Barto spoke up. “You must return to Fairyland. It’s the only way you can recover.”
