Forgotten Wife My Ex-Husband Regrets It After I Left (Clara and Liam) novel Chapter 212

Liam’s POV

The hallways of the hospital consistently carried a scent, a blend of disinfectant, chilly air and nervous tension that hovered like a faint mist. Each time I stepped into such a place a part of me clenched immediately. Countless painful memories remained here. Endless nights and defeats I wished to forget.

Yet my pace remained swift, nearly hurried. The noise of my shoes striking the ground seemed loud, against the backdrop of buzzing machines and the nurses’ soft talks.

Emily.

The nurse mentioned that Emily was discovered unresponsive on the pavement outside our apartment building. No wallet, no ID only a phone, with a dying battery and somehow the sole contact number available was mine.

Not her family. Not her friends. No one except me.

A tiny fraction of me grew cold upon hearing that.

Meanwhile another part seemed empty as though an existence l ought to have detached from was unexpectedly drawing me back in.

I inhaled deeply attempting to suppress thoughts. The top priority at this moment was ensuring her well-being. End of story. My gaze tracked the sign directing to the emergency department. The white lights shone excessively bright causing everything to seem more frigid. The area was bustling with individuals moving to and fro alarms sounding from monitors of a doctor shouting to a nurse, in the distance. Together it created a symphony I wished never to experience again.

I passed by rooms, my thoughts wandering to a grim period when Emily and I were still a couple. The disputes, the nights, the fatigue that accumulated until no space remained to comprehend one another.

So now she was, by herself? To the extent that I was the person they could reach out to?

I swiftly brushed my hand over my face. This wasn’t the moment to dwell on that. Not, at this time.

I stopped briefly by the vending machine attempting to calm my breathing. I waited a moment yet every second only caused the gloomy thoughts to accumulate.

What if her condition was serious? What if it was too late?

No. I was unable to think in that manner.

I kept moving. I noticed my heart beating more forcefully than normal. I wasn’t sure if it was due to anxiety or because a fragment of the past I believed was long gone had come back to the surface.

Halfway, along the corridor I spotted the nurse who hadcontacted me before. The woman wearing glasses identified me immediately.

“Mr. Liam?” she called out while drawing near.

I nodded swiftly. “How’s she doing?”

“When she was discovered her blood pressure had fallen sharply. There are indications of fatigue and lack of nutrition.” Her tone was clinical yet soft as though expecting my response. “We’ve administered fluids. Her awareness is beginning to improve.”

I nodded more yet my heart leapt. Extreme fatigue? Lack of nutrition?

Just as I got to the door my heart pounded more intensely than earlier as though my body sensed that opening that door would bring about some kind of change.

I breathed out slowly. A part of me wished to head home to Sienna and Noah. Yet this was an issue I needed to face.

I couldn’t just leave it unresolved.

I tapped gently. Entered the room.

Emily lay on the bed pale yet somehow perfectly composed as usual. Her blonde hair fanned out over the pillow. When she noticed me her eyes grew wide. Then brimmed with tears.”Liam,” her voice was faint.

1 approached cautiously yet maintained some space. “Are you okay? The nurse mentioned you were discovered on the pavement.”

Emily raised her hand feebly as though seeking assistance. “I believed you wouldn’t arrive.”

“The nurse reached out to me so I came. I also needed to confirm your safety.” My voice remained even.

Emily started to weep quietly. “I was frightened, Liam. I was truly frightened.”
