Liam’s POV
Emily’s contact caused me to tense up.
In the past at some point I could have eased up. That’s not the case now. Not anymore.
“I will ensure you are properly looked after,” I stated calmly. “I cannot remain here.”
“Why?” Emily begged. “Is she valued above me? That woman she took you away from me didn’t she?”
Her words made me step back half a pace. “Don’t involve Sienna in this,” I answered firmly. “This happened long before she came into my life.”
“I don’t trust you,” Emily whispered, clutching my hand firmly. “I lost you on her account.”
“Emily.” My tone became deeper and more distant now.”
You drifted away from me due to your decisions. It happened quite a while back.”
She paused briefly. The tears continued to stream down her face. “Liam, I’m sorry. Could you allow me another opportunity?”
I gently withdrew my hand from her hold.
Emily appeared shocked. “Please don’t do that. Don’t leave here.” She attempted to grasp me more but | gently but swiftly moved her hand aside.
“‘m done with this,” I declared. “What we had is finished.””NO!” Emily’s tone escalated, frantic. “If you step out of this room it shows you’re truly abandoning me!”
I glanced at her experiencing a blend of compassion and a firm refusal.
“Emily, I departed quite some time ago. I simply hadn’t expressed it explicitly.”
Emily paused briefly, appearing unable to absorb what I had said. Gradually her face crumbled. Her eyes became watery, her breathing irregular. She moved slightly closer to me, as though still yearning to grasp something lost long ago.
‘Liam, please!” her voice broke. “Don’t abandon me anymore.”
I gazed at her for a moment. A portion of me which once would have given in and eased the moment when someone wept still existed. That part had bound me for years.
But not anymore.
“I’m not going anywhere,” I murmured gently. Decisively.” Our separation happened before now. You just refused to acknowledge it.”
Emily rapidly shook her head, her hair disheveled, her expression filled with terror as if she were losing footing. ” Don’t say that! You still care don’t you? You showed up!
You came, Liam! That means”
“It shows I’m human,” I interrupted. “I care since I’m not an individual. Not because I desire to return.”Emily fell quiet on her lips. No noise came out. Her frame shook gently.
I went on softly, “Don’t confuse kindness with anything else.”
The room was engulfed in silence as if the very atmosphere was holding its breath.
Gradually Emily moved back, to the side of her bed..
Rather than taking a seat she remained motionless. Her eyes were bloodshot revealing a fear that overwhelmed her, a fear that held her to the past not from affection but from sorrow.
The words caused her to hesitate. She hid her face with both hands, her frame folding inward like a child. Her crying softened, fragile and breaking like someone who at last understood the world wouldn’t stop simply because she was scared.
I remained silent, for a moment allowing her to confront the truth independently. I was no longer able to rescue her. That wasn’t my duty nor my entitlement. While her shoulders kept shaking and her soft cries echoed through the room I gradually looked away.
I was certain she would survive. I was sure she was capable of overcoming this. She simply hadn’t found confidence in herself yet.
However couldn’t give up the home I was creating the people depending on me merely to fill an emptiness that was no longer my responsibility to mend.
“Liam, please. Remain here a bit more. I require you.”
“I will not.” I replied, this time, with no delay.
I genuinely sensed the conviction within me.
“I have fulfilled my duty to ensure your safety. What remains is not my obligation anymore.”
Emily gazed at me, sorrow evident in her eyes. I realized that remaining would only lead to repeating the same loop of guilt, quiet manipulation and unresolved echoes, from the past.
I pushed the call button. Reached her manager.
As the call was connecting I whispered, “I hope you get better soon. However, I can’t stay here any further.”
Her voice shattered into a scream, “Liam, don’t leave me!”
