Sienna’s POV
We didn’t move right away. The embrace lasted longer than usual not because we were trying to hold time still, but because our bodies both understood that moments like this were anchors, small things that gave balance before life sped up again.
I was the first to pull away, standing up while smoothing the wrinkles in my clothes. “I’m going to check the doors and windows,” I said, more as an excuse not to break contact too abruptly.
Liam nodded, stood as well, and followed me as we made our way around the house at an easy pace. There were no heavy conversations. Just footsteps, brief touches when we passed each other, and small habits that felt familiar.
In the kitchen, I washed my hands and poured myself a glass of warm water. Liam stood in the doorway, leaning his shoulder against the frame, watching me with an expression I couldn’t quite read somewhere between tired and content. “You seem more calm lately,” he said.
I smiled as I took a sip. “Maybe because I stopped fighting myself.”
He nodded slowly, as if he understood more than what I said aloud. We turned off the lights one by one, letting the house sink into the soft glow of the night. When we passed Noah’s room, we paused. The door was slightly open, and I peeked inside. Noah was. sleeping curled up, hugging his dinosaur plush, his breathing steady. Liam smiled a father’s smile that always appeared without being asked.
“We’re lucky,” he whispered.
I nodded. “Yeah.”
In the bedroom, I changed into my pajamas and let my hair loose from its tie. Liam did the same, his movements calm, almost rhythmic. We climbed into bed without many words, as if there was an unspoken agreement to keep this night light.
1 turned off the lamp, leaving only the soft glow of the nightlight. Liam lay on his side facing me. I moved closer, resting my head on his arm. His hand automatically wrapped around my shoulder, a familiar habit that had never truly disappeared.
“If you’re tired tomorrow, just rest,” he said quietly. “Your work matters, but you matter too.”
Those words closed something in my chest that had been left open. “You too,” I replied. “Don’t push yourself.”
We smiled at each other in the dark. I listened to his breathing as it slowly deepened, his heartbeat steady. In my mind, thoughts of tomorrow, of the trip, of work lined up neatly, then faded one by one.
The alarm hadn’t gone off yet when I opened my eyes. Theclock on the wall showed a little past five still too early but for some reason my body was fully awake. Maybe because I knew Liam would be leaving town today. There was an urge in me to make sure everything went smoothly before he left.
