Most backed off after being refused, but a couple of them were persistent.
One, a flashy but seedy–looking man, frowned. “You’re not a local, are you, pretty lady? Don’t you know who I am? ‘ou really won’t give me any face?”
Another chimed in, “That’s right. You should at least ask around about who our Mr. Lane is. He personally came ver to invite you, and you dared to refuse? Offending Mr. Lane…”
Maggie frowned.

Franklin watched, then turned slightly toward Chad.
Chad immediately understood.
Back when Maggie was at Wilson Group, Franklin had largely ignored her. But in the past two years, Franklin had doted on their daughter. Even if he was preparing for divorce, he had encouraged Isabella to stay connected with Maggie.
In other words, Franklin might not love Maggie and might treat her coldly, and he might tolerate her ambiguous loseness with Johnny–but he would never allow shady men to harass the mother of his child.
With that in mind, Chad nodded subtly and went downstairs.
Before things escalated further, he stepped in. “Mr. Lane, isn’t it? I’m Chad, Mr. Franklin of Wilson Group’s
ecretary.”
