Franklin and everyone else saw it. Nobody replied.

A moment later, Julia showed up in the chat.

She tagged Harry: Daphne has a project she’d like to discuss with you. Are you free?

Harry took a beat before responding: I’ve got time. Give her my contact info and have her reach out.

Julia: Sure.

They wrapped up and went quiet. Levi: ? Nobody’s gonna acknowledge me at all?

Meanwhile, Harry’s phone was already ringing. It was Daphne. He listened to her pitch, then said, “I’m actually pretty interested in what your company’s working on. That said, I’ve got a lot on my plate right now, so I’ll probably need to have someone else on my team handle things going forward. I hope that’s not an issue, Ms. Everly.”

Daphne smiled. “Not at all. I have full confidence in your team, Mr. Becker.”

“Appreciate it.”

And with that, Harry made up an excuse and got off the phone.

Daphne set her phone down and looked across the table at Julia with a small laugh. “Am I really that scary?”

“What do you mean?”

“Your Mr. Becker agreed to work with me, sure, but he made it clear he won’t be handling things personally. And the second we were done, he didn’t even try to hide it, just cooked up some excuse to hang up. What, is he worried I’m going to latch onto him?”

Julia didn’t say anything for a moment.

Daphne wasn’t upset about it, just genuinely puzzled.

“I’m your friend. And Johnny’s. I figured even if he thought I had some kind of interest in him, he’d at least be a little warmer for your sake. I didn’t expect him to be this cold about it.”

Julia wasn’t surprised. Not really.

She remembered how Daphne had acted toward Maggie at the welcome dinner. It hadn’t been subtle. Harry hadn’t been in a position to say anything then, but she knew him well enough, something like that would stick. Becoming actual friends with Daphne was probably never on the

table after that.

Daphne tilted her head, curious. “Is he just trying to avoid any misunderstandings with whoever he’s into? Doesn’t want too much going on with

other women?”

“Maybe,” Julia said.
