Just as Rex was about to voice his thoughts, the shrill ring of Julia’s phone sliced through the air, interrupting the moment.
She quickly excused herself, a hint of urgency in her tone as she answered, “Hello?”
On the other end, Sophia’s voice burst forth, brimming with an infectious excitement that was impossible to ignore.
“Sis! You won’t believe what we just heard! Brother-in-law spent over four billion on a diamond just a few days ago! Do you think he’s planning to propose to you tonight for your birthday?!”
Julia felt as if the ground had shifted beneath her. Time seemed to freeze, and her heart raced, each beat echoing in her ears. She halted mid-step, her mind racing with possibilities.
Rex, noticing the sudden change in her demeanor, leaned in closer, concern etched across his face. “What’s wrong? Did something happen?”
“It’s nothing,” she replied, though her voice lacked conviction.
Julia forced herself to regain her composure, yet the thrill of Sophia’s words sent her heart into a frenzy. “When did this happen? Sophia, how did you find out?”
“We just heard it! Apparently, when brother-in-law bought the diamond, someone was there to witness it all,” Sophia gushed, her excitement palpable even through the phone. “Over four billion! A diamond of that caliber is practically priceless. Sis, can you believe it? He’s actually going to propose to you with that! He truly treats you like a queen!”
Before Julia could collect her thoughts and respond, Janice—who had received the news a bit later than Sophia—caught on to the fact that her daughter was on the line and frowned at the situation.
“Sophia, why would you tell Julia right away? If you share it now, what surprise will be left for tonight?”
Realization dawned on Sophia, and a wave of regret washed over her. “Oh no, I’m so sorry, sis! I was just too excited; I didn’t think—”
