**Freedom 489**
**Chapter 489**
Earlier that day, Julia had confidently declared her plans to go out later with Franklin, her excitement palpable in the air.
However, as the minutes turned into hours, she finally made her way downstairs, looking completely different from the vibrant woman who had spoken earlier. Clad in soft pajamas, her makeup absent, she appeared almost ghostly in her demeanor.
Sophia, caught off guard by her sister’s sudden transformation, blinked in disbelief. “Sis, you’re not going out anymore?”
Julia’s face was a mask of neutrality, devoid of any emotion. “Franklin suddenly had something to deal with. We’re not going.”
The disappointment hung heavy in the room. “Oh…” Sophia replied, her voice trailing off, trying to grasp the implications.
So, on what was supposed to be her special day, all Franklin had managed to do was share a meal with her, alongside Harry and Levi?
Sure, he had gifted her presents, but they felt like hollow gestures compared to the warmth and attention he had shown in previous years.
Yet, everyone around them accepted his excuse without question, assuming he must have truly been caught up in an urgent matter.
In the days that followed, Maggie found herself buried under a mountain of work.
It was one particularly busy afternoon at Cole when her phone rang unexpectedly, cutting through the monotony of data review.
As she answered, the color drained from her face, replaced by a rush of panic. Without a moment’s hesitation, she bolted toward the hospital, her heart racing with dread.
Once inside the car, a chilling thought struck her, echoing the doctor’s earlier warnings. She hesitated for a moment, then swiftly dialed Isabella’s number.
Isabella had just wrapped up her school day, her spirits high as she answered the phone. “Mom!” she exclaimed, her voice bright with youthful energy.
Franklin, who was picking her up that day, glanced over curiously as he overheard Maggie’s voice on the other end.
But as the conversation unfolded, Isabella’s expression shifted dramatically. “Okay, I understand. I’ll come right now,” she said, urgency creeping into her tone.
“What happened?” Franklin asked, sensing the tension radiating from her.
“Mom said great-grandmother is sick. She’s in the hospital now. She wants me to go see her.”
Franklin felt a chill run down his spine as the weight of her words sank in.
“Dad, let’s go to the hospital first,” Isabella urged, her voice laced with anxiety.
