Chapter 171 The Recording

ThirdPerson POV:

She had just ended the call with George when her phone rang again–right on cue. It was an unknown number, but judging by the timing, she already knew who it was.

The moment she answered, Iris‘ voice came through, tense and hurried. “I’ll give you the pup. You break the mating bond with Julian.”

A faint, mocking smile touched Lillian’s lips.

What kind of person did that make Iris, really?

After years of plotting against her, now she was willing to use her own pup as a bargaining chip.

The sheer selfishness and cruelty of it turned Lillian’s stomach.

Iris pressed on, “Send someone to pick it up. The address is-”

“No need.”

Lillian cut her off before she could finish.

The sudden refusal caught Iris off guard. “What?”

Lillian’s smile widened. “I said no need. You heard me.”

“Don’t you want out of the bond? Once you have that pup, Julian will have no choice but to sever it. You know how he is–he’d do anything for his brother’s pup.”

“I wouldn’t know the first thing about caring for a newborn,” Lillian replied coolly. “It’s too fragile. What if something happened while it was in my hands?”

“You don’t have to take care of it yourself. I’ll make sure it’s fed. You just need to get Julian to break the bond by morning.”

When Lillian repeated, “No need,” Iris‘ voice edged into panic.

And that panic told Lillian everything she needed to know–something was definitely wrong with the pup.

Lillian descended the rest of the steps calmly.

“I didn’t take the pup. How could I possibly give it back to you?”

She moved past him toward the kitchen, picked up a glass, and filled it with ice water.

She had just taken a sip when Julian crossed the room in quick strides, grabbing her wrist and jerking it roughly.

The glass tipped, fell, and shattered on the floor with a sharp crack, water splashing over Lillian’s feet.

The gold wetness seeped into her skin–as cold as the feeling in her chest.

Julian’s grip on her wrist tightened painfully. “I already agreed to break the bond. What more do you want from me?”

“Even if you promised me the entire Graves Group right now, I still couldn’t get that pup for you.”

Julian’s voice dropped, low and dangerous. “Where is it?”
