Seeing that neither Liam nor Victor responded, Julian continued, his voice thick with emotion. “My older brother is gone. He died, leaving Iris and the pups behind. Iris has fallen into a deep depression… and one of the pups didn’t make it.

“If I’d known she would end up like this, I never should have claimed her as my mate in the first place.”

Hearing that, Liam and Victor exchanged a look, unsure how to reply.

If anything, everyone knew Lillian hadn’t even wanted him back then–Julian was the one who had pursued her relentlessly.

Lillian had always been clear–headed about her place.

Having grown up in an orphanage, she never believed she was suited for someone o standing within the pack.

From the very beginning, she had tried to turn him down.

But Julian had chased her across territories, refusing to take no for an answer.

Now, he was just… shattered.

“But even after that damned omega turned out so cruel… I still love her,” Julian mumbled into his glass.

“If she dares to get involved with Finn… I’ll kill him.”

Liam and Victor stayed silent, their expressions tight.

Listening to this was getting painful.

Noticing Julian’s glass was empty, Liam cracked open another bottle of bourbon and pushed it toward him. “Here. Drink.”

Victor shot Liam a questioning look. “What are you doing? He’s had enough.”

“He’s not out yet,” Liam replied flatly. “You want to keep hearing this?”

As friends, they couldn’t just walk away.

If they left and Julian, drunk out of his mind, stumbled into it and drowned, they’d carry that guilt forever.

But sitting here listening to him ramble wasn’t much better.

So Liam let him have two more bottles, until Julian finally slumped over, completely wasted- too drunk to form another coherent sentence.

Even then, he kept slurring Lillian’s name.

Victor shook his head at Liam. “Never knew you could be this cold.”

“You wanted to keep hearing about how ‘hard‘ Iris has it?” Liam countered.

“No,” Victor admitted quickly.

What was so hard about her situation anyway?

Her mate dies, and not long after, she starts making moves on his younger brother.

To Victor, it wouldn’t be surprising if she’d had something to do with her mate’s death in the first place.

Why else would she be so shameless about going after Julian?

Together, they hauled Julian back to Laurel Manor.

Once he was safely inside, they headed out.

Victor considered calling Lillian, but a glance at the time changed his mind.

In the car later, Liam broke the silence. “Who do you really think was responsible for the pup’s death?”

“It definitely wasn’t Lillian,” Victor stated firmly.

Now that the bond between her and Julian was severed, he felt no need to refer to her by any formal title–Lillian was just Lillian.

He and Julian were close, but hearing that she’d broken the bond… part of him was relieved for her.

“Don’t take me home,” Victor said abruptly. “Drop me at Shallows Bay.”

Something told him the pup’s death wouldn’t just fade away now that Julian and Lillian had severed ties.

With someone like Iris involved, who knew what else she might stir up.

Lillian had gone to bed early and woke just after seven the next morning.

Once up, she made a call to the local police precinct.

She’d barely ended the call when her phone rang–Victor.

“Is it true?” he asked without preamble. “You and Julian really severed the bond?”

Lillian sighed softly. “You think I’d lie about something like that?”

“Be careful with this situation around the pup’s death,” Victor warned, genuine concern in his

tone.

After leaving Julian the previous night, he couldn’t stop turning it over. However he looked at it, he didn’t believe Lillian would harm a pup.

He’d always seen her as someone with integrity.

But Iris? Who knew.

The fact that she’d set her sights on her late mate’s brother so soon spoke volumes.

Someone like that was capable of anything.

“I will,” Lillian replied evenly.

“And… don’t take all this too hard. Leaving Graves Pack might be the best thing for you.”

Hearing the sincerity in his voice, Lillian almost smiled. “Aren’t you supposed to be Julian’s friend?”
