“I don’t want to infect you,” Ezra said.

“It’s still a celebration moment,” Vargan said, eyeing us both. “What’s the rush, Ezra? You should stay longer than usual. Why are you always so eager to leave your birth house?”

“Lylah needs to return to her academy,” Ezra replied smoothly. “And I have responsibilities waiting. Besides…” His hand brushed lightly against mine. “We haven’t had time to celebrate properly. Alone.”

Vargan huffed, though amusement softened his expression. “If you insist. Though I would’ve liked my granddaughter here a little longer.” His gaze shifted to me. “But I suppose I can’t argue with her mate.”

We returned to Lunaris the following day.

Winter had settled in fully. The snow blanketed the city in silence, the air sharp and biting. It kept us indoors. In the end, we celebrated in the penthouse.

Ezra ordered everything.

At first, I thought he was teasing me–I had pointed at half the items in passing, jokingly–but by evening, every single one of them had been delivered.

I stared at the spread, stunned.

“You took care of me while I was sick,” he said simply when I questioned him. “Why shouldn’t I take care of you now?”

“It was only two days,” I replied, shaking my head. “You’ve done/far more for me since we started living together.”

He reached for me then, pulling me gently down beside him.

“That was different,” he murmured. “This… I caused trouble. You had to see me like that.” His jaw tightened slightly. “Did it feel like a burden?”

I froze.

Then my brows drew together, irritation rising fast and sharp.

How could he still think that way?

How many times would he question his place beside me?

“Of course not,” I said firmly, turning to face him fully. “Don’t be ridiculous.” My voice softened, but the conviction only deepened. “Who looks after someone they love and calls it a burden?” My fingers curled lightly into his sleeve. “That’s not how this works, Ezra. That’s not how we work.”
