150 What Love Leaves Behind
After Edwin finished, Justin helped him back to his room.

Ralph glanced at Aella with open disgust. “You’re supposed to be the Winters‘ lady of the house, and you can’t even handle one woman? Pathetic.”
When Ralph left, Virginia walked over to Tyrone.
“Tyrone, by choosing to tie yourself to Zera, you’ve already given up on Aella. For the sake of the 20 years you and Aella spent growing up together, just let her go.”
Tyrone’s face darkened, his anger simmering beneath the surface.
Virginia pressed harder. “You don’t love her, you can’t protect her, and you can’t even give her the basic respect a husband should. She’s already stepped aside for your so–called love, yet you still keep her here. What do you even want?”
“Mom, say whatever you want–I’m not divorcing Aella!”
Tyrone’s voice cracked with emotion as he turned and stormed out of the house, like he couldn’t breathe.
He drove through the night, speeding straight to the hospital. By the time he arrived, Aella had already been moved into a room.
Brad came out just as Tyrone reached the door, looking lost. Brad pointed toward an empty ward nearby. “We need to talk.”
The two men stepped inside.
The moment Tyrone shut the door, Brad’s fist came flying.
With a heavy thud, Tyrone took the punch full on.
When Brad swung again, Tyrone caught his arm. “Brad, enough!”
Brad shoved him back hard. “You swore in front of Aella that you’d live and die with Zera! Did you ever stop to think how she felt?”
Brad’s voice rose. “Aella took a whipping and knelt for over an hour just to help you two, and you were busy protecting Zera. And you still dare say there’s nothing between you?”
Tyrone leaned against the end of the hospital bed, wiping the blood from his lip.
He spoke slowly, each word cold and heavy. “That kid isn’t mine. You know that. There’s

nothing between me and Zera. I just wanted to stop Edwin from going after her.”
Brad let out a sharp laugh. “That’s exactly what makes you worse.”
He stepped closer. “Zera says she’s doing all this for her kid. You say you’re doing all this for Zera because of the kid. You two bend over backward for each other–if that’s not love, what is?”
Brad glared at him. “Tyrone, we grew up with Aella. If I let you keep hurting her like this, I don’t deserve to call her my friend.”
His voice hardened. “You hurt her for Zera, for some child that isn’t even yours. You don’t deserve to be her husband.”
With that, Brad turned and slammed the door behind him.
Tyrone stood alone in the empty room for a long time.
Six years ago, he had loved Zera. He’d even thought about marrying her.
But six years had passed. Deep down, he knew–he didn’t love her anymore, and he never would.
Justin hadn’t struck her with full force, but the whip still burned across her skin. She had barely managed to endure it.

The air between them was thick and heavy.
By 2:30 a.m., her IV was done. Tyrone called the nurse to remove the needle. Aella slowly opened her eyes.
She refused his help, pressing the cotton ball to her arm herself.
Tyrone bent slightly, his hands hovering awkwardly in the air.
His deep gaze fixed on her pale face. Forcing a small, uneasy smile, he finally spoke.
“Does it still hurt?”
The moment the words left his mouth, he regretted them.
He’d been whipped enough times to know–even as a grown man, it was unbearable. Aella had always been delicate, afraid of pain. How could she not hurt?
Aella lay on her side, quietly watching the tension in his brow.
She gave a faint, fragile smile. “It doesn’t hurt.”
Their eyes met.
A sharp ache stabbed his chest.
“Aella, I know you’re in pain. If you’re upset, just say it. Don’t hold it in.”
Seeing him lose his composure, Aella struggled to sit up.
