Anna leaned over Zera, trying to soothe her. “Zera, don’t listen to her. She’s messing with your head. She doesn’t want you to get better.”
Aella didn’t even blink. “If you really want to know if your legs are ruined, ask Daniel.” She tilted her chin toward the door. “He performed the surgery himself. If you ask him directly, he won’t lie to you about your condition.”
Anna lost it. “You bitch, shut up!”
Zera panicked and reached under her pillow for her phone. Anna snatched it away and held it out of reach. “Zera, don’t. She’s vicious. She’s trying to provoke you.”
The more Anna tried to stop her, the faster Zera’s fear spiraled. She grabbed her mother’s shaking hands and cried, “Mom, tell me the truth. Am I never going to walk again?”
Anna’s eyes darted away. Tears leaked out despite her efforts to stop them. Zera froze as if struck.
“No, that’s not possible! That’s not what you said.”
Zera broke down completely.
Aella still wasn’t done. “Zera, since you’re Tyrone’s ex, I’ll send you the best wheelchair money can buy.”
Zera braced her hands on the bedrail. Her eyes were bloodshot as she tried to haul herself down to rip Aella apart. “Bitch! This is all your fault! If you hadn’t stolen Tyrone from me, I wouldn’t be like this. That diamond on your hand was mine! Mine!”
Aella made a soft, almost innocent sound. “Oh.” She nodded, then lifted her hand to show off the ring. “Then come take it.”
Her voice stayed light. “If you can stand up and take this ring off my finger, I’ll give you Tyrone.”
Zera coughed up a mouthful of blood, collapsed backward, and passed out on the spot. Anna screamed and ran to find a doctor.
Aella looked at Zera, who was lying unconscious on the ground. Then, she glanced back at the people behind her. “She couldn’t handle it. That’s not my fault.”
Justin and bodyguards nodded quickly.
Just then, Noel hurried in. “Ms. Reid, Mr. Winter is awake.”
The moment Aella heard that Tyrone was awake, she turned and went straight back to his room.
Inside, his head wound had been cleaned and bandaged. He lay quietly on the bed with his eyes closed.
When she walked in, Virginia and Ralph were speaking with the doctor.
She went to the bedside and took Tyrone’s hand. Her voice softened. “Tyrone, are you feeling better?”
Tyrone slowly opened his eyes. His lashes were damp and trembling slightly. He tried to hold himself together, but the instant he looked at Aella, his eyes welled up with tears. His gaze flickered away as if he couldn’t quite face her.
He sat up carefully, stiffly, and cautiously. He didn’t answer. Instead, he pulled her into his arms carefully, as if she might shatter.

His fingers trembled against her back. His mouth moved, struggling to form words, but nothing came for a long moment.
He remembered everything. Two lifetimes of Aella. Too much had happened between them.
He’d hurt the girl who loved him most, and he’d never earned her forgiveness in either life. But now everything that should have happened and shouldn’t have happened already had.
He’d promised her a lifetime. They were engaged. How was he supposed to tell her about their past? What he’d done? What she’d suffered?‘
If he broke off the engagement now, that would be another kind of cruelty. But if he kept going and built a future with her, what would happen when she remembered?
The thought of Aella regaining her memories and leaving him for good one day made his chest ache so badly that he could barely breathe.
For the first time, he didn’t know which way was forward.
He just held her, lost and hurting. He was too afraid to move. Aella felt it–the faint tremor of unease beneath his touch.
