Chapter 183
Dylan thought, ‘The sins I brought upon myself?
‘What does that even mean?
‘Did I really cause Dad’s death?
‘And what does Eliana have to do with any of this?‘

He didn’t even have time to get checked out. Dylan rushed downstairs, jumped in his car, and headed straight for his grandparents‘ place.

Ever since their son went missing, Jacob and Sophia had been in a constant state of despair. Every day, they would sit by the door, waiting for him to come home.
When Dylan arrived, they acted as if he wasn’t even there.
Jacob kept his eyes fixed on the doorway, hope shining in his eyes, still waiting for his son to walk through.
His son had promised he’d be back for lunch, but he never came home.
Jacob thought, ‘My son didn’t have any real flaws, except for being a little too sentimental when it came to love. Above all, he is a truly filial son.
‘He went overseas to build his career, but every year he’d come back to visit, and he called them every single day just to see how they were doing.
‘His marriage was miserable, but that damned sense of responsibility kept him chained to it, which made his life so lonely all these years.
‘My son had already suffered so much. Why did he have to end up in that car accident?‘
Jacob let out a heavy sigh, his eyes, weathered by years of hardship, filled with pain.
Dylan could tell his grandparents didn’t want to talk to him, and it stung. “Grandpa, Grandma, I’m here,” he said, his voice low.
Only then did they barely glance his way, their faces cold and distant.
Jacob just muttered a quiet “Oh,” and kept his eyes glued to the doorway, so much hope lingering in those tired eyes.
Dylan’s chest tightened with sympathy, Jacob had barely eaten or slept these days, just sitting there, waiting for his son to walk through that door.
“Grandpa, did Dad say anything that morning before he left?” Dylan asked.
Jacob shook his head. “No. He just said he had something to do and would be back for lunch. And that was it.”
Dylan knew his dad had gone to the DNA testing center to pick up the paternity test report.
They found the report inside the car after it was dragged out of the water.
But the pages were so soaked and ruined, nothing was legible anymore.
Dylan turned and headed upstairs to his dad’s room. He rummaged through the bedding for a while and finally found a

single strand of hair.
He picked it up carefully, took out a ziplock bag he’d brought with him, and slipped the hair inside.
As he was about to leave, he noticed a cup sitting on the desk. It looked like it belonged to his dad.
After a moment’s thought, Dylan found a bag and took the cup along as well.
Jacob watched Dylan storm in and storm out, barely sparing him a glance.
“That idiot grandson. I’m done caring about him,‘ Jacob thought.
Sophia bowed her head, wiping away tears. ‘Our family is so unlucky,‘ she thought.
Bringing that evil woman, Beatrice, into the house had destroyed everything.
Sophia wished she could strangle Beatrice with her own hands, just to vent her rage.

After Dylan left, Sophia got a message from Serena.
Serena: [Grandma, Mr. Ashford is fine now, so don’t worry about him. I was right behind him when the accident happened, and he’s safe after the rescue.
Serena: [You and Grandpa really don’t need to worry, but you absolutely can’t tell anyone about this, or Mr. Ashford could end up in danger again.
Serena: [Grandma, not even the servants can know. Only you and Grandpa are allowed to know the truth. But you still have to keep up the act, to pretend as if you’ve really lost your son.]
Sophia let out a sigh of relief.
‘Stella really is a blessing to our family,’ Sophia thought.
Sophia glanced around warily, making sure no one was listening.
Then she leaned in and whispered to Jacob, “Jacob, I’ve got something to show you, but you have to stay calm, okay?”
Jacob gave her a brief, distant look, tears shimmering in his eyes. Right now, he didn’t want to look at anyone but his son.
“I don’t want to see it. I’m just waiting for my son to come back,” Jacob said, his voice flat.
Sophia unlocked her phone and showed the screen to Jacob.
“Quick, take a look. I’m going to delete it right after you see it. If you don’t, I’m worried you’ll get too worked up,” she urged.
Jacob’s brows furrowed as he glanced down. “Ah…”
Sophia quickly clamped a hand over his mouth and whispered sharply, “Don’t make a sound! Do you want your son to end up dead again?”
