Chris watched as Serena regained her usual composure. A faint, knowing smile touched the corner of her mouth. Her eyes lowered with deliberate nonchalance, her posture proud and detached, radiating an aura of quiet authority that commanded respect.

This was Ms. Hale of Cloudmere Estate, decisive and unyielding.

Just then, Bennett Dalton, the butler, entered with two maids carrying dinner. His gaze softened with affection as he looked at Serena.

Bennett said, “Ms. Hale, you must remember to eat on time. Having dinner so late isn’t good for you. Your health has never been strong. You really mustn’t treat yourself this way. No matter what happens, your well- being comes first. Only when you’re healthy can you accomplish what you set out to do.”

Despite Bennett’s gentle nagging, a warm current flowed through Serena’s heart. “Bennett, I understand. I won’t neglect my health anymore. I promise you–from now on, I’ll have my three meals on time every day.” Her voice carried a hint of affectionate pleading.

Seeing the slight dampness in Bennett’s eyes, Serena felt a pang of guilt. She had given herself nearly five years to drift, to hurt. But that was enough. She wouldn’t make foolish choices anymore.

Bennett half–believed Serena’s promise, but he had watched her grow up since she was little and couldn’t bring himself to scold her further. “You two, come over and have dinner now. Eat well and rest early. Mr. Hale knew you were hospitalized for a month. He’s been worried sick about you.”

Serena knew Edwin had been deeply worried about her this time. Even though he was abroad, his thoughts were always with her. “Alright,” she replied softly.

Serena turned to Chris and offered a small smile. “Let’s eat first. We can talk about the rest tomorrow.”

Chris nodded, his eyes lingering on her pale complexion with quiet concern. He felt Dylan never deserved the pain Serena had put herself through, but it wasn’t his place to say it. His only duty was to protect her from further hurt.

“Ms. Hale, I’ve already sent Caleb to investigate everything about Eliana. He’ll report to me the moment he finds anything. He was also very happy to hear you were back.” Chris said. Caleb Granger was also Serena’s assistant.

“Okay. Let’s eat first,” Serena replied, then began her meal.

Serena ate her meal weighed down with troubled thoughts. Her mind kept returning to Liam’s strange behavior today. The incident weighed heavily on her, refusing to fade.

Beatrice had seemed unusually on edge about the child, almost as if she was deliberately warning Serena to stay away. That kind of vigilance was out of character for her.

The sound of the child crying “Mommy” still echoed in Serena’s mind. This was something she had to look into herself. Once the matter at the bar was dealt with tomorrow, she would visit the hospital where she had given birth.

After eating, Serena went upstairs to rest. Back in her exquisitely decorated, luxurious yet cozy room, she finally let herself unwind completely.

Lying on the bed, her mind kept replaying the scene of Liam crying his heart out, calling her “Mommy.” The image wouldn’t fade.

Serena let out a long, weary sigh and pressed a hand against the dull ache in her chest. Then she remembered she hadn’t taken her medication yet. She got up to take her pills and noticed the bottle was nearly empty.
