“Alright, Mr. Ashford. I’ll keep investigating. As soon as I get the address, I’ll let you know right away,” Miles said with a sigh. Looked like he’d have to visit Stella.

Today was the day Kendall’s daughter was finally coming back home.

Serena and Lyra went with Kendall early that morning to get her daughter.

Kendall had even prepared a gift for her daughter.

They walked into the orphanage.

Serena looked around. She was an orphan too, but she’d been lucky. Her grandpa had taken her in.

Her eyes landed on a two–story building right in the center of the orphanage, that’s where the kids stayed.

The walls were painted a warm pink.

Colorful curtains hung from the windows, making the whole place feel warm and welcoming.

Surrounding the building were areas for the kids to play, a spacious playground, classrooms, and playground equipment where laughter echoed through the air.

Thanks to all the kind donors over the years, the orphanage was in pretty good shape.

The three of them headed to the director’s office.

The director, a middle–aged woman, welcomed them with a warm smile.

Lyra got straight to the point. “Hello, Director. I’m the one who contacted you a while back. Some things happened back then, and the child ended up here. We’re here to bring her home today. Her name is Shelly.”

The director froze, her eyes flickering with guilt. “Shelly? She was just taken away by a middle–aged man. He came to me with a paternity test and made a generous donation to the orphanage, so I let him take her…”

“You gave her away without even making sure he was her real father?” Kendall shouted, her voice trembling with anger. She’d been terrified something like this would happen. She’d rushed over the moment the doors opened, but she was still too late.

The director looked away, her hands twisting together nervously.

Serena shot the director a cold, sharp look. “Director, you say you care about these kids, so how could you do something like this? Is it really all about the money? Can anyone just walk in, flash some cash, and walk out with a kid?”

The director kept dodging her eyes. Money was tight lately, and the guy who took the child had handed over a big wad of

cash.

“I… I really didn’t know. The man mentioned Shelly by name, so I thought he was with you, the ones who contacted me a few days ago. They just left with her, maybe ten minutes ago.

“If you hurry, you might still catch them,” the director stammered, looking anxious.

Kendall was devastated. ‘Why is this happening?‘ she thought, her heart aching.
