Wyatt let out a low, amused chuckle, “Serena, I know you’re not scared, but if someone really wants to hurt you, they’ll always find a way.”
Serena got it. She’d learned the hard way. That’s how Beatrice managed to trick her, and she never noticed.
After that lesson, she was extra cautious about everything now.
Serena said, “Wyatt, I’ll be careful. You need to watch your back, too, even overseas. The Ellington family is ruthless. So many heirs, all fighting for a piece of the empire.
“It’s like tossing meat to a pack of starving wolves. Just holding on to what’s yours is already a struggle.”
Serena understood just how tough things were for Wyatt in his family.
One careless move, and there would be no way back.
The Ellington family was like a treacherous swamp, and no one dared to make a move unless they were absolutely ready.
Wyatt let out a soft sigh. “Yeah, Serena, that’s exactly why Grandpa won’t let me come back. He thinks I don’t have the stomach for it, so he doesn’t want me staying in the country to help him deal with the family mess.
“I’m too far away to do anything if something happens on his end. So you’ve got to help him out for me. Once I’m back, I’ll be there for you, too.”
Serena smiled. “Of course, Wyatt. We’ve been through everything together since we were kids. I’ll always have your back.
“Handing this deal to your family has already kicked off the infighting in the Ellington family, but sooner or later, a civil war was bound to break out anyway.”
Wyatt said, “Yeah, Serena, it was always going to happen. But seriously, thanks for choosing to work with us this time.
“I’ve built up some connections overseas, nothing like yours, but when I come back, it’ll be enough to protect my family, so we can both win together.
“Serena, being the heir is so exhausting. Why can’t we just live life on our own terms, like normal kids?” Wyatt couldn’t help
but say.
Serena glanced out the window. Snow blanketed everything. The sky was misty and gray. Everything seemed drained of
color.
She smiled, “Wyatt, I know you don’t like inheriting this position, but you grew up in this family. It gave you honor, comfort, and luxury.
“You can’t escape these chains, so why not learn to embrace them? We owe it to our families to take responsibility. Instead of letting others trample you, make them admire you.”
She’d once longed for an ordinary life, but real normalcy came with its own restrictions.
She thought, ‘People get humiliated everywhere they go. Wyatt knows that all too well.
Wyatt said, “Serena, I get what you’re saying. You’ve always been like a little sister to me growing up, so you’re the only one I can really open up to. When spring comes, and everything’s blooming again, that’s when I’ll be back.”
Serena smiled, knowing exactly what he was thinking.
“Wyatt, if there’s anything on your mind, you can always talk to me. You know I’d never turn my back on you. You know how
