Amara looked utterly lost, tears streaming down her face.
"Hudson..."
Hudson looked away, refusing to meet her eyes, his voice like flint.
"Also, this is a one-time thing. Don't let it happen again. I'll provide a good life and financial support for you and your daughter, but that's where it ends. You're an adult; learn to keep your distance."
Amara bit her lip so hard it nearly bled, her nails digging into her palms.
All her words died in her throat, turning into a bitter ache in her chest.
"I understand."
Hudson's breathing gradually steadied. He planned to tell Jade about this as soon as he got back.
He had helped Amara, but he had also laid down the law about her over-reliance on him.
Once Jade saw how he handled it, her attitude toward him was bound to soften.
At the very least, she'd probably start making him breakfast again.
Airport.
Jade was in the lounge waiting for her flight when Jewell called her on FaceTime to chat.
"Be careful in Habor City. If anything feels off, run. Don't go playing hero with your own life."
Jade's lips curved into a small smile. "I know. You told me ten times last night. I'll be careful."
Jewell sounded genuinely disappointed. "I really wish I could go with you."
"What's to be sorry about? If you want to visit Habor City, we'll plan a trip together next time."
Jade comforted her, then pulled a thermos from her bag.
"Hold on a sec. I'm going to go grab some water."
"Okay."
Jade walked toward the water station with her phone and thermos. As she turned a corner, she collided head-on with someone.
"Sorry about that."
She apologized while looking up.
When she saw the face in front of her, she froze. On the other end of the video, Jewell caught a glimpse of the man and gasped in shock.
"Victor? You told me you were working late at the office. What the hell are you doing at the airport?"
Victor Hales seemed surprised to run into Jade, let alone catch her on a call with Jewell. His expression flickered for a split second before smoothing out into a gentle smile for his wife on the screen.
"I got a last-minute business trip and didn't have a chance to call you yet."
Jewell's brow knit slightly. Her mind was racing, but she put on a pouty face.
"Fine, I'll let it slide this time. But the moment you land in Habor City, you better give me a full play-by-play of your schedule."
Victor played along with his usual good-natured tone. "Of course, honey. My bad, I was in such a rush I forgot. That's on me."
"Better be," Jewell said, acting somewhat satisfied.
"Anyway, I'll text you later if I need anything. I need to finish talking to Jade now."
Victor gave a small nod. "Sure."
