When Victor got the report that Jade was indeed working at the Forster estate, he finally relaxed. He contacted Lyndon and arranged to meet at a deserted warehouse by the sea.
Jade, however, was tracking Victor's every move. The moment she heard he'd driven away from his hotel, she changed her clothes and followed him in a rental car.
An hour later, at the seaside warehouse.
Victor stepped out of his car, carrying a briefcase as he walked toward the structure.
Across from him, a black sedan pulled up. A man stepped out and walked toward Victor.
Jade was perched in a nearby shadow. Her vision was sharp; she recognized the man from the sedan immediately. It was Lyndon.
The two men met, clapped each other on the shoulder, and walked into the warehouse together.
Jade held her breath, stayed low, and crept around to the other side. She found a gap in a side door and leaned in to listen.
Inside the warehouse.
The sun was setting, casting long, dark shadows across the interior.
Rusted barrels were stacked in the corners.
Nearby were broken metal racks and piles of lumber covered in a thick layer of dust.
The sound of waves crashing against the rocks outside echoed through the hollow space.
Jade scanned the room. She was small enough that the piles of wood could serve as perfect cover.
They were closer to where Lyndon and Victor were standing, giving her a better view.
Flick.
Lyndon lit a cigarette with a silver lighter.
He tucked the lighter away, the cigarette dangling from his lips, and suddenly swung a fist at Victor's jaw.
Thud—
Victor stumbled back, nearly hitting the floor, but Lyndon landed a second blow.
"Victor, you think playing dead is funny? Huh? You think I'm playing?"
The second punch sent Victor sprawling to the ground. A trickle of blood ran from the corner of his mouth, and his black suit was covered in dust. He looked a mess.
Lyndon frowned. "What the hell does Silas have to do with this? I thought he washed his hands of the Faith business. My people said he's been in Kingston, but he hasn't made a move."
Victor adjusted his crooked glasses. "I don't think Silas is here for the family. I think he's after the core files we're holding."
"That's actually possible," Lyndon's frown deepened.
"Those files are the foundation of the Faiths' technology. When Silas was kicked out, he never got his hands on them. When Ronald took over, they went to him. If Silas has been nursing a grudge all these years, getting those files to build his own empire would be the ultimate revenge."
Victor nodded. "During my years in Veridia, I heard rumors that Silas wanted to monopolize the Kingston market. Once he gets the core files, I suspect he's going after the Walter Group next. He wants to crush them and become the new king of the city."
"Silas is a cold bastard. That sounds exactly like something he'd do."
Lyndon finished his cigarette and glanced at Victor's briefcase.
"Did you bring your half of the files? If you have them, let's see them. We need to plan our next move. We've been sitting on this for too long. We can't let someone else beat us to it."
Years ago, Amara had stolen the core files from the Faiths. To keep Victor in his pocket, Lyndon had given him half the files. The plan was for Victor to take care of Ronald, and then they'd merge the two halves to build their own empire.
But Victor had vanished before they could do anything.
For all these years, Lyndon had been sitting on only half the data, which was practically useless on its own.
