Even with the news, Hudson didn't jump in blindly. He sent Kevin to dig around and confirm the intel from multiple angles.
$100 million wasn't pocket change, even for him. He couldn't afford a mistake.
Once he had confirmation, he planned to sweep the bidding and go all-in on the project.
Knock, knock, knock.
A sound at the door broke his concentration.
"Come in," Hudson said.
Rosa pushed the door open, looking a bit tentative.
"Sir, Ma'am is back."
At those words, the corner of Hudson's mouth twitched into a microscopic smile. But the second he saw Jade downstairs, his pride took over, and his words came out sharp.
"Oh, so you remember where you live? I thought you'd forgotten the way back."
Jade heard the bite in his voice and shot back just as coldly.
"Should I leave then?"
Hudson's eyes narrowed. "Don't even think about it."
Jade gave him a look that said typical, then tried to brush past him to go upstairs.
As she passed, Hudson grabbed her wrist.
"What happened to your forehead? Is this how Julian 'protects' you?"
Jade yanked her hand away, looking thoroughly annoyed.
"You're unbelievable. Julian is a friend. Why is it his job to protect me? And what right do you have to blame him?"
"Hah."
Hudson stepped forward, his hands gripping her shoulders.
"Did you forget you're my wife? Defending another man right to my face... do you ever stop to think about how I feel?"
Jade let out a short, dry laugh, her clear eyes like ice.
"How you feel? Does that even matter?"
The questions hit Hudson like a physical blow. His grip on her shoulders tightened.
"You used to... you used to care about my feelings more than anything."
Jade's shoulders throbbed under his grip, but her expression didn't change. "Hudson, since when did you become so obsessed with the past? Let me remind you: I want a divorce. You can wallow in your memories all you want, but don't expect me to play along."
The bluntness of it left Hudson reeling. His face turned like a thundercloud.
"We could actually talk like normal people, but you're determined to piss me off, aren't you?"
Jade slapped his hands away. As he moved to close the distance again, she used her suitcase as a barrier and let out a tired yawn.
