Sebastian’s eyes reflected her image.

He gave a small nod, his tone turning serious. “Yes. You’re my fiancée. My future wife. If someone upsets you, then it’s my job… to make you feel better.”
Those words hit Riley’s heart like an electric shock.
In his own way, he was letting her know how much she meant to him.
The cake in her hand suddenly tasted a little sweeter.
In that moment, the people outside who were still picking her apart became nothing more than background noise,
Warmth spread from her chest down to her fingertips, making them tingle,
Riley instinctively lowered her gaze, hiding the emotions in her eyes.
She’d always seen this upcoming marriage as a transaction–each of them getting what they needed.
But Sebastian kept showing her this clumsy, direct kind of care.
Being protected like this felt so foreign to her that she didn’t quite know what to do with it.
Riley absentmindedly poked at the delicate tiramisu with her spoon.
After a long moment, she looked up again, pushed down that unfamiliar warmth, and spoke in her usual calm voice. “Thanks. Actually, I’m not upset.”
Meeting Sebastian’s slightly probing gaze, she explained honestly, “When I texted you yesterday to remind you about the meeting, I already figured something like this might happen.
“The man trying to set up the meeting between you and Lucas–he’s an old–school traditionalist in Havenbrook circles. He cares more about bloodlines and family names than anything else. To someone like him, someone like me–who came out of nowhere- will always be a bit of an outsider. No matter how much I achieve, in his eyes, I’ll never be legitimate.
“So I left early. I just didn’t want to give him the chance to say something even worse to my face.”
Riley spoke with the calm of someone who’d learned a lot from life. “As for what they say about me after I’m gone–I don’t care.”
Her calm wasn’t an act.
In the years she’d spent building herself up in Havenbrook, she’d gotten used to walking through thorns and crushing prejudice with pure results.
But she was used to the pain, yet it still hurt. All those small hurts had slowly made her grow emotionally cold and guarded.
Sebastian listened quietly, his expression hard to read.
He knew perfectly well how hypocritical and snobbish Havenbrook’s so–called high society could be. But he hadn’t realized Riley had been fighting that battle alone this whole time.

Chapter 110 Started Trusting Him
Thinking back to the smug faces he’d seen earlier, Sebastian’s gaze turned colder.
When he looked at Riley again, the sharpness around him softened. Even his voice became gentler.
“So,” he said, “their taste and their judgment is terrible”
He didn’t directly deny those people’s worth.
But he’d still taken her side completely.
Riley blinked. Then a smile bloomed on her lips.
“Yeah,” she said softly, nodding in agreement.
In that moment, an unspoken understanding seemed to form between them.
The VIP room fell quiet again. But this time, the silence wasn’t awkward–it was strangely comfortable.
Sunlight streamed through the huge window.
The air smelled of rich coffee and sweet pastries. Time itself seemed to slow down.

Riley ate her cake in small bites. Sebastian sat across from her, his gaze resting on the rolling green lawn outside, lost in thought..
After a while, when Riley finished the last bite of cake and elegantly dabbed her lips with a napkin, Sebastian seemed to notice and turned his attention back to her.
“All done?” he asked.
“Yeah. It was really good,” Riley said sincerely.
Sebastian saw the genuine satisfaction on her face, and his mood seemed to lift.
He stood up, his tall figure silhouetted against the sunlight. “Come on. Let’s go somewhere else.”
“Okay,” she said, without asking where.
At some point, without even realizing it, she had started trusting him.
They left the VIP room, one after another.
Riley got into his car. As they drove, she watched the scenery fly past the window and slowly realized they were heading toward the hills.
Her heart stirred. She turned to look at the man focused on driving.
