At/those words, Riley’s group exchanged near-identical looks of barely concealed amusement.
Colin was having the hardest time keeping a straight face. He turned away, shoulders shaking with suppressed laughter.
Justin simply stared at the sky, looking thoroughly unimpressed.
Audrey, never one to hold back, leaned in and whispered to Riley, her expression a picture of disbelief “Isn’t this island a Harper property? Who is this guy? Some long-lost relative of yours?”
Riley’s lips curved into a cool smile as she dismissed the notion outright. “Never heard of him. My fathe taste isn’t so poor that he’d invite someone with this level of nouveau-riche flair to review the project.”
Still, she hedged her bets just in case; what if he was some distant connection she didn’t know about, an calling him out would embarrass the family? She quietly stepped away to a secluded corner of the deck and texted Raymond, “Did Dad invite someone named Killian Welch to check out the island resort?”
Raymond called their father, got a quick answer, and replied, “No. Our project’s already popular domestically; no need for random testers. Dad just gave you that excuse so you and Sebastian could enjc yourselves without interruption.”
Reading his reply, Riley’s doubts evaporated. She pocketed her phone, a knowing smile curling at the corner of her mouth. When she turned her gaze back to Killian, it was with the cool detachment of a spectator at a comedy show.
Meanwhile, Killian was already in full performance mode. With a grand wave of his hand, he invited everyone to tour his yacht, his voice dripping with bravado. “Make yourselves at home! This was my dad’s birthday gift to me- the latest model, crazy horsepower!”
Riley barely glanced at the cabin layout and nameplate before recognizing the model. It was one of the standard yachts the Harper Group had purchased in bulk from an Italian manufacturer specifically for thi
resort.
She was certain that Killian here had either booked the island’s most premium luxury suite, which came with complimentary yacht access, or simply rented the thing outright.
But Riley didn’t bother exposing him on the spot.
She wasn’t going to take the bait, but Colin, on the other hand, was just getting started. His inner drama queen took center stage.
He let out an exaggerated “Whoa!” and circled the helin, running his hand over the gleaming steering wheel with mock awe. “Man, Killian, this thing is way more upscale than our little boat! Look at this leather, the craftsmanship. Wow, I bet this handles like a dream!”
Colin swirled his glass and launched into a theatrical introduction. He pointed at Justin and Audrey. “These two are siblings.” Then he gestured to Riley and Sebastian, drawing out his words/”And these two… are married.”
He left it at that.
Killian’s gaze bounced between Colin and Audrey, and he jumped to the obvious conclusion. “So you two are a couple too?”
Before Colin could answer, Audrey bristled and cut in sharply, “Who’s a couple with him?! He just invited himself along like a pathetic tagalong!”
The blunt dismissal made Colin’s grin falter for just a second. A flicker of irritation crossed his face, but he smoothed it over quickly. With a shrug, he went along with her narrative. “Yeah, what she said. We’re just friends.”
Killian’s eyes lit up at that.
His mind started racing with calculations.
Riley was the most stunning of the group, but she radiated a cool, untouchable elegance, and she was clearly taken.
