The news that Jessie was pregnant hit Peter like a bolt from the blue. He barely stopped to think before heading straight to the Goff house that same night.
By the time he arrived, Otto was already asleep. Kennedy stood at the door, eyebrows drawn together. “It’s pretty late, Peter. What brings you here?”
Peter didn’t waste time. “Jessie’s pregnant.”
Kennedy’s eyes went wide. “She’s what?”
“She just sent me a picture of the test.”
Peter headed for Jessie’s room and pushed open the door. Jessie was sitting on the floor, looking small and lost. The second she saw him, she rushed into his arms.
“Peter, you’re here. I thought… I thought maybe you wouldn’t want me anymore.”
He held her tight, his heart suddenly lighter. Becoming a dad again was the best news he could imagine. “Don’t be silly. You’re my wife. I’m never leaving you.”
He looked her over, a gentle scold in his voice. “You know you’re pregnant now, right? You can’t just sit around on the cold floor.”
Jessie’s eyes shimmered with unshed tears. “I just… needed a minute to calm down. The floor helped.”
Peter stroked her back and held her closer. “I’m sorry, honey. You don’t have to calm down alone. Let’s just go home, okay? If you want to yell at me or even hit me, I deserve it. I was an idiot before.”
Jessie’s lips curved in a secretive smile. Being pregnant definitely had its perks. “No yelling. Let’s just go home, okay?”
Peter managed to cheer her up in no time. He ended up staying the night at her family’s place.
The next morning, Otto looked surprised to see Peter at the breakfast table. Once everyone in the house knew Jessie was pregnant, the mood shifted. Happiness spread like sunshine.
Jessie secretly hoped for a boy too, but Peter just smiled. He didn’t care—boy or girl, it didn’t matter to him.
…
Meanwhile, Adam had made up his mind. “Dad, about that marriage alliance with the Austin family… I’ll do it.”
Ms. Austin had always tagged along after Adam since they were kids, but he’d never really liked her much. He usually avoided the topic, but now, with only the Austins strong enough to stand up to the Clarksons, he felt like he didn’t have much choice.
His father nodded. “It’s more than just a marriage. We need to work closely with the Austins from now on. I’ll talk to Dannies today.”
But when Otto returned, he didn’t look happy. Things hadn’t gone according to plan.
Back when the Goff family was on top, teaming up with them was a win for the Austins, especially with their daughter smitten with Adam. But now, after Max had nearly destroyed Goff Inc., the Austins weren’t going to agree so easily. They had one condition—if the marriage was going to happen, Goff Inc. would have to merge into the Austin family’s business.
