The doctor gave Eleanor a reassuring smile. “Everything looks good. You’re already a mom, so you know the drill. Just keep taking your folic acid, eat well, and make sure you get all the nutrients you need. And most importantly, no sex for now.”
Max was jotting everything down. “So, does that mean it’s okay after three months?”
Eleanor shot him a look, her eyes sharp. Max didn’t even flinch.
The doctor cleared his throat. “It might be okay, but it really depends on how the baby is doing. Honestly, it’s better not to risk it. If you absolutely have to, just be as gentle as possible.”
As soon as they stepped out of the office, Eleanor’s cheeks were flushed.
“You’re unbelievable. We already went over all this last time. Why did you have to ask again today?”
Max grinned sheepishly. “Come on, babe, don’t be mad. I just wanted to double-check. I swear, I’m not some kind of animal. I was just asking.”
“I don’t even want to look at you right now. Go get me bubble tea. I want it, and I want it now.”
Eleanor plopped herself down in the waiting area, clearly in a mood.
Max sighed. “How about we get the nanny to make you some when we get home?”
“No, I want the real thing from outside.”
She wasn’t budging, so Max gave in. He left the bodyguard to stay with her and headed out to buy it himself.
As Max stepped into the elevator, Peter Clarkson came out of another one, carrying a thermal container. He realized too late he was in the wrong building. He should have been in the inpatient wing, but then he noticed Eleanor sitting alone in the hallway. He couldn’t help but walk over.
“Eleanor, are you waiting for someone?” Peter asked.
She looked up, her lips pressed together. “Just here for a check-up. Did you need something?”
“No, nothing really.”
Peter glanced at the obstetrics sign, feeling a knot tighten in his chest. After a moment, he finally asked, “Are you pregnant?”
Eleanor gave a small, almost amused smile. “Yeah. Any other questions?”
Autumn took one look at him and felt her heart clench. “Peter, is work stressing you out? You look like something’s weighing on you.”
Peter slumped into a chair, glass still in hand, and took another sip. “Mom, she’s pregnant.”
Autumn’s brows furrowed. “Who’s pregnant?” She paused, then her face changed. “You mean Eleanor?”
He could barely get the word out. “Yeah.”
Setting his glass aside, he covered his face with his hands. A tear slid between his fingers. “Mom, I regret everything. I really do.”
Autumn let out a long sigh. She knew that feeling all too well. “Son, this was your choice. All you can do now is keep going on this path. If things get too hard after the baby comes, then maybe you can think about a divorce.”
Peter didn’t reply. He just sat there, lost in his own regrets.
Out in the hallway, separated from them by just a door, Jessie Goff stood frozen, biting her lip so hard she tasted blood.
