ELOISE
After a while, we all gathered under the shield to watch the video. The manager’s hands were trembling as he held the tablet, his face pale with fear. He didn’t dare to look at Damon as he signaled for the video to be cast onto the giant screens surrounding the arena. The footage was crystal clear, so there was no way we would miss if Summer threw those silver pins.
I knew for sure that she did, which was why I announced it; if I weren’t sure, I wouldn’t have even said anything. As the video started, in slow motion, everyone watched as Summer dipped her hand into her pocket and casually scattered the silver pins onto the track before I arrived.
A collective hasl went up from the crowd of elite werewolves. And the whispers turned into a roar of disgust.
Well. Well. Well. There it was: Summer just disgraced herself. Apart from the fact that she would be carrying out our bet, she still had to do something disgraceful, which meant she wasn’t sure of herself during the competition.
“How wicked!” someone shouted from the crowd, the crowd she had brought to mock me in front of where now the ones mocking
her.
“She could have crippled that horse or worse, killed Eloise!”
“And she’s the one the Lockwoods are so proud of? She’s a green snake under a fucking green grass!”
I turned my gaze ti Summer. She looked like she wanted to melt into the mud. I didn’t understand her sometimes. Did she think nobody would have seen what she did? She planned all that with this big crowd? Was that how impulsive she was? That was just plain stupid for real. Her eyes were darting around, looking for a way to run, but there was no way out.
“The video doesn’t lie, Summer,” I said, my voice cold and steady. “It’s time for you to fulfill your end of the bargain. Or do I need the King to enforce it? Don’t forget what you said, so please, proceed.”
Summer’s leg has out, and she sank back into the filth. Tears–real ones this time, born of pure humiliation–streamed down her
face.
“Edward…” she sobbed. Reaching for his hand.
But we all watched as Edward stepped back from her. He looked at the screen, then at the woman whom he had chosen over me, and he looked sick to his stomach. He turned his head away, unable to even look at her.
I wanted to ask how it felt, choosing a snake and a disgusting person over, but you know, there was no need for me to gloat, not that I needed anything from them again. He turned his head away, unable to even look at her, and a smirk almost made its way to my lips.
“Admit it,” I commanded, stepping closer. The power I felt earlier radiated from me, making the air heavy. “Hold up the sign and say it.”
Damon’s eyes were not on the screen; they were on my hand. He noticed the red blood beginning to seep through my gloves where the reins had sliced into my palms. His expression shifted from cold to murderous.
Summer, seeing that no one was going to save her, finally reached for the whiteboard that Olivia had conveniently brought over. With shaking hands, she held it up for the entire club to see. The words ‘I am a pathetic liar, and I lost to a better woman were written in bold, black ink.

“Im…. im sorry,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.

“Louder!” Olivia barked, leaning with a satisfied grin. “We can’t hear you over the sound of your reputation shattering.”
“Im sorry,” Summer shrieked, her face burning a deep and shameful red.
I gave her one last look of pure pity. “You see how nice I’m being right now? You remember the initial bet? You were supposed to stand at the entrance of the club and hold that sign up, but I don’t even have the time to watch you carry a sign up I have things to do. So, remember this, Summer. Next time you try to trip me, make sure you don’t fall into your own trap. I won’t be this merciful twice, and you know this is the second time you’ve fallen into your own trap while trying ti hurt me. If I were you, I’d back off.”
I turned to walk away, but a sharp sting in my hand made me wince. I tried to walk away and hide it, but I forgot who was standing
next to me.
Damon stepped into my path, his massive frame blocking the sun. Before I could protest, he reached out and grabbed my wrist. His grip was firm and possessive, and it sent a jolt of electricity straight to my heart. We both froze for a second, the memory of our last night together–the heat, the gasps, the way he had almost marked me–flashing between us.
“You’re hurt,” he growled, his thumb brushing against my pulse point.
“It’s just a scratch, Damon. I’m fine,” I said, trying to pull back because I wasn’t used to the affection he was showing me in public, but he didn’t let go.
“It’s deep, Eloise. You know this yourself because you’re a healer. You should know that if this gets infected, it’ll be a problem. I’m taking you to the medical suite,” and his tone held absolutely no room for argument. It was the voice of a King, but the look in his eyes was all man.
Suddenly, Edward rushed over, looking desperate to gain some shred of dignity.
“Eloise, come on, let me help. I have my car right here, and I’ll take you to one of the best hospitals in the pack.”
