Damon took me to a place called “The Midnight Bistro” after we left the stables in the Moon Vale club. It was a secluded, high–end spot where the elite went when they didn’t want to be found.
My hand was already bandaged, Damon had insisted on cleaning the wounds himself in the back of her s car, his large and warm hands trembling slightly with a mix of care and repressed fury.
He had ranted all through the car ride to this place, saying things like he wasn’t sure why I didn’t allow him fuck Summer and her family up just once. He really wanted to hurt them, I could tell by the way he talked and by how agitated he was by the whole situation.
But we were in the restaurant now, and Damon stayed calm as the waiter bowed and left us alone in our private chamber.
“What are you craving, mama?” he asked, his dark eyes searching mine.
“Steak,” I said. “Im starving.”
“Did you not want anything before going for the competition?” he asked.
“No, my stomach would have been upset if I did that. I was too anxious to eat. I would have thrown everything up if I did.”
He rolled his eyes under his sunshade and looked at the waiter. “Then we’ll have the Tomahawk. Rare,” Damon decided. He didn’t even bother to look at the menu; he knew exactly what was best.
While we waited for the food, Damon took off his grey jacket, draping it over the back of his chair. He rolled up his sleeves, revealing his thick and muscular forearms and the faint trace of scars from past battles.
Seeing the only powerful and ruthless Lycan King in the world–a man known to be cold and merciless–sitting across from me and carefully pouring water felt so surreal.
When the steak arrived, he didn’t even let me pick up my knife. He took my plate and began to cut the meat into perfect, bite–sized pieces for me, making sure I didn’t have to use my injured hand.
“Try this,” he said, placing a piece on my plate. “It’s seasoned with rare herbs from the

I took a bite, and the rich, smoky flavor exploded in my mouth. . I couldn’t help but let out a slight hum of satisfaction.
Damon’s lips curved into a rare, beautiful smile. He looked at me with an intensity that made my heart skip a beat.
“Mama, I want you to listen to me very carefully right now, very carefully, cause I need you to hear what I’m saying. You don’t have to hold back against your family or the Lockwoods anymore. If they insult you, I will silence them. If they touch you, I will burn their world to the ground. You are going to be my Queen, and a Queen never bows to peasants.”
A warmth that had nothing to do with the food spread through my chest.
“Thank you, Damon.”
My smile was small, but it was real. For the first time in years, I felt like I didn’t have to fight my battles alone. Just as I was about to tell him to let me handle them, and as the mood was getting intimate, a shrill, annoying voice shattered the silence.
“Eloise Lockwood, is that you? Oh my God, a lot must have happened when we were overseas. I thought you were still missing?”
I looked up and felt my mood drop immediately. A group of four people was working toward
our table.
I recognised them immediately; they were my old classmates from the elite academy I attended before I was kidnapped from the pack. Dexter Clifford and Elvis Harper were leading the way, with Sarah Kim and another girl clinging to their arms.
They had all been overseas for the last few years, and clearly, they hadn’t heard the news about my return or who I was with.
“Oh my Goddess. It is her!” Sarah giggled, covering her mouth with her manicured hand. “I heard a rumor that you were sold off to some rogue pack in the mountains and had to marry an old and toothless wolf. How did you manage to escape? Or did he get tired of you?”
“Sarah, be nice,” Dexter smirked, his eyes scanning me with a look of fake pity. “Maybe life in the mountains was good for her. She actually looks fed, even though it seems a little too much with how fat she looks right now.”
I kept my face completely blank.
“Do you need something, Dexter?”

“We are just catching up with an old friend,” Elvissaid, her s voice loud enough to draw attention from other tables. He looked at Damon, who was sitting in the shadows of the booth, and let out a mocking laugh.
“Who’s this? Did you pick up a new bodyguard? Or is this the ‘mountain husband‘ we heard about? If he’s the one, at least he looks good and a bit wealthy.”
