Summer knew exactly what she was doing. Grandfather had always respected faith and tradition. The image she gifted him represented that. I smiled, she knew what she was doing, and I was impressed. Well, it was only normal that she would try to get on his good side after the whole thing that happened.

The statue wasn’t just a gift; it was a calculated strategy. She had planned it all before tonight. She needed one opening at this ceremony to make people like her again, so that everybody would forget what happened and then welcome her back to her place in society.

And it worked: the moment she presented the gift, the guests‘ reactions were immediate.

“Look at that,” someone said. “The craftsmanship alone is incredible.

“The royal colour…thats not ordinary. That is extremely rare,” another person said.

“It must be worth a fortune.”

“Millions at least,” voices continued to rise in the hall.

“And she’s the adopted daughter? That’s very impressive.”

“No wonder the old man favours her so much.”

The whispers spread quickly, and Summer heard everything. Of course she did. And I saw the satisfaction in her eyes before she lowered her head again, hiding it behind a gentle and humble smile.

“As long as grandpa likes it, the pride doesn’t matter,” she said softly, and I almost laughed at how hard she was actually trying to make this perfect.

Her voice sounded sincere, but j knew better; she didn’t care about the gift, she cared about what it brought to her. Attention. Approval. Position.

Grandfather examined the statue quietly for a moment; he didn’t say anything, then finally nodded.

“This is so thoughtful,” he said. “I like it.”

Summer’s eyes widened just a little bit, remaining gentle and humble. Her eyes slid toward me, and she gave me a challenging look, but I wasn’t exactly in the mood to bite. She wasn’t worth it.

I stood quietly at the edge of the room, watching everything unfold with a calm expression. People like her needed reactions to survive. Silence unsettled more.

But of course, she wasn’t done. After soaking up all the attention, she turned to me with a fake smile.

“Eloise,” she said in a sweet voice enough to fool anyone but me. “What did you get, Grandpa?” she asked innocently.

I watched as the roll turned their expectant gazes toward me, and some people even leaned slightly closer, as if for entertainment. I met her gaze briefly, and I could see it. She was waiting for me to wait; maybe she thought I wouldn’t bring any gift. Maybe she thought I would bring something cheap. Something that would make her shine even brighter in comparison.

But I had no intentions of playing into her expectations. I stepped forward calmly. In my hands was a wooden box; it looked too simple. It wasn’t even decorated, but it cost millions. Compared to her glossy and expensive case, mine almost looked out of place in a room like this. The reactions were immediate.

Doubt.

A few doubtful murmurs. And Summer let out a quiet scoff. “Such a plain box.”

“What could be inside?” someone asked.

Some other guests chuckled under their breaths; they were already expecting disappointments. I ignored it all and stepped in front of my grandfather. I held the box out with both my hands.

“Grandfather,” I said. “I wish you a long life and good health,” I said. “I brought you a small gift. I hope you’ll accept it.”

Grandfather looked at the box, then at me, before he collected. His expression was unreadable. Slowly, he opened it, and just like that, the room went quiet.

Inside the box was something unexpected.

It wasn’t gold or jewels. Or anything flashy. It was dark. Twisted and strange–looking, at first glance, it almost looks worthless. Like something pulled out of the ground and forgotten.
