Time passed quickly. Before anyone realized it, a week had gone by.

Today was Grandfather’s eightieth birthday.

The entire estate was decorated for the celebration. Bright lights covered the garden trees, and luxury cars filled the driveway outside the mansion.

The Lockwood family had always been powerful in the business world. Even now, Grandfather still held enormous influence. So naturally, many important families came to celebrate with him.

The large banquet hall was filled with elegant guests. Grandfather sat proudly in the main seat at the center of the hall. He wore a dark red formal suit embroidered with golden patterns that made him look dignified and commanding.

His silver hair was neatly combed back. Even at eighty years old, his eyes were still sharp and observant.

People approached him one after another, offering greetings and gifts. He accepted them politely with small smiles. Mother and Father moved through the crowd, welcoming guests and managing the event.

I stood near one of the tall windows. My dress was simple compared to many others. A soft white evening gown decorated with delicate silver embroidery. My hair was pinned back with a single pearl clip.

Damon didn’t come with me, and for some weird reason, i missed him. Is it okay to miss my husband? We have gone back to our routine of being busy. Damon hasn’t really been around like that. He’s in Mexico right now for business, and he’s been gone for over a week. I miss him.

But he didn’t have to know that, or anybody either.

I didn’t need anything flashy.

Sometimes, quiet elegance spoke louder than diamonds. Not far away, Summer finally appeared in the hall. She had spent most of the morning in the study as she promised.

Now she walked into the party wearing an extremely bright pink dress. The fabric glittered under the lights. Her jewelry was even brighter. It was obvious she wanted attention. Anyone watching would immediately notice her.

She smiled sweetly as she greeted the arriving guests. If someone didn’t know the truth, they might think she was the perfect daughter of the family.

Soon, another important family arrived.

The Mikealsons.

They were longtime business partners of our family. Summer immediately rushed toward them with excitement.

“Mr. and Mrs. Mikealson!” she said brightly. Her voice was cheerful and welcoming.

Anyone watching might think she was their future daughter–in–law. In high society, rumors spread quickly. Many people already believed there might be a marriage alliance between the Hawthorne family and the Westons.

I only glanced at them briefly before looking away. It had nothing to do with me. Guests continued arriving, each bringing expensive birthday gifts.

Mother carefully asked the staff to record every gift in a notebook. In families like ours, gifts were never simple generosity. They were debts. And debts always had to be returned later.

Finally, Summer walked toward Grandfather again. She bowed politely. “Grandpa,” she said sweetly, “I wish you a long life and endless happiness.” Grandfather looked pleased.

“Good girl,” he said with a smile.

“I prepared a special gift for you,” Summer continued proudly.
