Chapter 16 Prove It
ELOISE.
The moment the Elder finished speaking, Summer let out an ugly scream.

“Three miles? Carrying these bags? My heels will be ruined!” she said, looking down at her four–inch designer heels. They were covered in glitter and definitely not made for the mud.
I almost felt sorry for her. The keyword here being almost.
Summer probably thought the Luna trials would be like the stories in the books, just standing around looking pretty until the King picked her. She didn’t realise that being a Luna meant being a leader, and a leader had to be tough.
Some of the other girls, well, most of them were also wearing thin sandals and leather shoes; only one of them also had a sneaker on. One of the girls I recognised as a loner who doesn’t talk to anyone was the one who had sneakers on.
“The trials begin now,” the elder said, blowing a bone whistle. He didn’t care about their shoes.
didn’t waste a second; I grabbed my bag, threw it over my shoulder, and started walking toward the mountain path. The longer girl was right behind me, her face calm.
Behind us, I could hear the other girls grumbling and huffing. High above, small silver drones hummed; these were the eyes of the pack. They followed us, sending a live video feed to the big screens in the town square and to the phones of every werewolf in the territory.
The path was steep and full of loose rocks; the sun hit, and skin began to itch from the sweat. But I didn’t stop. Compared to the things I had survived while living with the rogues, this was a walk in the park. I had run through forests twice this thick while being hunted by silver–tipped arrows.
Halfway up the trail, I heard Summer’s whiny voice.
“Ellie, wait for me. My feet are bleeding!”
I didn’t turn around; I knew the drones were watching my every move. If I stopped to help her, she would just find a way to make
me look like her servant.
“Eloise! You’re so cruel! Can’t you see your sister is hurting?” one of the other girls shouted from the back.
I finally stopped and turned around. Summer was limping, her makeup was starting to run, and she was crying real tears this time. She looked pitiful, but I felt no pity.
“She chose those shoes,” I said. My voice was loud enough for the drones to pick up. “Who comes to a wilderness trial in high heels? What does she think this is? That is being a fool, a future Queen needs to have common sense, don’t you think? If she can’t even pick the right shoes, how can she lead a pack?”
My words felt like a slap. Summer’s face went pale. The longer girl walked up beside me with a smile on her face. “Well said,” she whispered.
We kept moving, and we finally reached the Maiden’s hall–a large stone building near the sacred spring, half an hour before anything else.
The Elder was waiting for us when we arrived, and I wondered how he had arrived before us. “Eloise, Lex, since you arrived first,
1/2
you get the two private rooms with actual beds. The others will share the bunk beds in the common room.”
When Summer and the rest finally crawled up into the house, they looked like a mess. Their hair was tangled, and their expensive clothes were torn to shreds. Summer was shaking with rage; she had wanted to humiliate me, but now, she was the one sleeping on bunk beds with hundreds of other girls.
We were given thirty minutes to pack up our belongings. Then, the next task was announced.
“First mission,” the elder announced. “You have one hour to go into the woods and find enough wild ingredients for your dinner. If you don’t find dinner, you don’t eat.”
Summer immediately rushed over to me, and she grabbed my arm, her face twisting into a fake sweet mask.
